Swings Both Ways

18 Nov 2013

Swings Both Ways was released on 18th November 2013 and earned the title of the UK's 1,000th ever No.1 album, a whole 999 releases after Frank Sinatra's Songs For Swingin' Lovers! became the first. Robbie's tenth studio album, the record also took the top spot on the Christmas album chart over one month after its release, beating off competition from One Direciton and Take That bandmate Gary Barlow.

Following in the toe-tapping footsteps of Robbie's most successful album to date, 2001's Swing When You're Winning, the record features a mix of classic covers and original material as well as duets with some of pop's biggest names, including Lily Allen, Michael Bublé, Kelly Clarkson, Olly Murs and Rufus Wainwright.

The record is available on CD and download in two editions: the 13-track standard album and the deluxe version, which not only features three extra tracks but includes some very special bonus studio footage.

Robbie Says

First of all I wanted to do a Swing album, because I wanted to do a Swing album. I always knew I’d do another and I think now is the perfect time to do it. I’m enjoying show-biz and I’m enjoying my life and my understanding of where I am now is that there needs to be an event every time I bring out a record. The album this time is a definite ode and a loving glance towards a period on the planet that I was never invited to ‘coz I wasn’t there...I wanted to be, which I feel still very strongly linked to.
Going in I planned it to be very similar to the last one, and then I realized – that’s actually not what I wanted. It’s different – it’s not all covers, I had some songs that I wanted the world to hear and check out and maybe become part of the fabric of their lives, if I’m lucky enough, that I’ve had a hand in writing. So it’s very very similar to the last one, and very different – and hopefully I’m off to romance the world!

LILY SAYS

‘Dream A Little Dream’ is one of my favourite songs of all time so I didn’t hesitate when Robbie asked me if I’d like to duet with him on it. I was a bit nervous when we recorded it, especially when I asked him what he wanted me to do and he said something like ‘just be you’. But I’m really happy with it and think we do justice to a classic song.

RUFUS SAYS

Working with Robbie is a dream come true. I’m once again the envy of both sexes. Robbie is the real deal, full package, a total mensch and if I could come up with any more paired descriptive sayings I would use them as well.

OLLY SAYS

I absolutely loved working with Rob on this album. After touring Europe with him this year it seemed only right that we record something together, and “I Wan’na Be Like You” is such a classic sing-a-long tune. It’s always brilliant when you get to work with your mates!

Shine My Shoes 3:23 Lyrics

Another dawn, another day, another dollar to be made

I got a pocket in my soul where a little rock a little roll assimilate

I don’t care what you think you know

About who I am and how it goes

I made it easy to be me so yeah it’s easy to be me

And that’s why I say:

I know you can’t stand me

Cos I make you so angry

More and more each day

The way you don’t love me

Kinda makes you look ugly

Every word you say

Come up and see me

I kind of like the abuse

There’s no room in my bed

But while you’re here just bow your head

Then you can shine my shoes

Get out of my lane, boy, you’re not in my league

Some are born to thrive and some to under-achieve

Here’s something that’ll make you sick

I’m as happy as a pig in shit

I’ve been amused, I’ve been admired, I’ve been amazed, I’ve been betrayed

I know you can’t stand me

‘Cause I make you so angry

More and more each day

The way you don’t love me

Kinda makes you look ugly

Every word you say

Come up and see me

If you can take the abuse

There’s no room in my band

But while you’re here then lend a hand

And  you can shine my shoes

Shine my shoes

Kneel down boy

That’s why you can’t stand me

I make you so angry

More and more each day

The way you don’t love me

Kinda makes you look ugly

Every word you say

Come up and see me

I kind of like the abuse

There’s no room in my bed

But while you’re here just bow your head

Then you can shine my shoes

Shine my shoes

“Guy Chambers and I started writing together again after a break of about ten years, and ‘Shine My Shoes’ came out of the first batch. It’s in the spirit of a Sammy Davis Jr. song. In the biopic The Rat Pack there’s a dream sequence where Sammy Davis Jr. is dancing against the racists. I’m singing against the haters and the naysayers, giving them my time in the form of a swing song detailing exactly why they should hate me. The smugness will infuriate the haters, and the people who kind of like me will just think that it’s sweet.”

Go Gentle 4:31 Lyrics

You’re gonna meet some strangers

Welcome to the zoo

Bitter disappointments

Except for one or two

Some of them are angry

Some of them are mean

Most of them are twisted

Few of them are clean.

So when you go dancing with young men down at the disco

Just keep it simple

You don’t have to kiss though

Don’t waste time with the morons who think that they’re heroes

They will betray you

Stick with us weirdos

For all your days and nights

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there

Go gentle through your life

If you want me be I’ll be there

When you need me I’ll be there for you

Don’t try to make them love you

Don’t answer every call

Baby be a giant

Let the world be small

Some of them are deadly

Some don’t let it show

If they try to hurt you

Just let your daddy know

When you go giving your heart make sure they deserve it

If they haven’t earned it

Keep searching, it’s worth it

For all your days and nights

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there

Go gentle through your life

If you want me I’ll be there

When you want me I’ll be there for you

Go gentle to the light

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there, yes I will

If all your days are nights

When you want me I’ll be there

When you need me I’ll be there for you

“The first new song Guy and I wrote together – I see it as a Burt Bacharach kind of song. It’s about my daughter, Teddy. ‘Go Gentle’ is a promise of protection. It’s a song that I want to live up to, because it’s actually the most important thing I will do on the planet while I’m here – either be a good or a bad dad. Way more important than four nights at Wembley, three nights at Knebworth.”

I Wan'na Be Like You (feat. Olly Murs) 3:31 Lyrics

I'm the king of the swingers

Oh, the jungle VIP

I've reached the top and had to stop

And that's what botherin' me

I wanna be a man, mancub

And stroll right into town

And be just like the other men

I'm tired of monkeyin' around!

Oh, oobee doo

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be human too

Now don't try to kid me, mancub

I made a deal with you

What I desire is man's red fire

To make my dream come true

Now, give me the secret, mancub

C’mon, clue me what to do

Give me the power of man's red flower

So I can be like you

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be human too

Now I'm the king of the swingers

Oh, the jungle VIP

I've reached the top and had to stop

And that's what botherin' me

I wanna be a man, mancub

And stroll right into town

And be just like the other men

I'm tired of monkeyin' around!

Swing to the left, swing to the right

Put your hands up if you're lovin' life

Oh I'm lovin' life

Swing to the left, swing to the right

Put your hands up if you're feelin' nice

Oh I'm feelin' nice

Oh, oobee doo

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

From The Jungle Book, the first movie I went to see at the cinema, at the ABC in Hanley. I’m a big fan of Phil Harris who originally sang it. I think he might be lost in the annals of history somewhere, but Phil Harris happened and he was amazing. People should know about him because he’s cool as. I had no idea, until Olly came in to sing this with me, that Olly first auditioned for the X Factor with “I Wanna Be Like You” and he didn’t get through. Not that long later he’s in the studio recording it with me. That’s a lovely side story.”

Swing Supreme 3:17 Lyrics

Oh it seemed forever stopped today

All the lonely hearts in London

Caught a plane and flew away

And all the best women are married

All the handsome men are gay

You feel deprived

Yeah are you questioning your size?

Is there a tumour in your humour,

Are there bags under your eyes?

Do you leave dents where you sit,

Are you getting on a bit?

Will you survive

You must survive

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

Oh what are you really looking for?

Another partner in your life to abuse and to adore?

Is it lovey dovey stuff,

Do you need a bit of rough?

Get on your knees

Yeah turn down the love songs that you hear

‘Cause you can’t avoid the sentiment

That echoes in your ear

Saying love will stop the pain

Saying love will kill the fear

Do you believe

You must believe

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

“It’s nice to have a bit of my history in here with me, given a bit of a cleaning, some new clothes on it. I’m very fond of the original record - it was an out-and-out pop song and I’m proud and pleased to have it in my artillery - but now there’s a sophistication that it didn’t have before, and some gravitas. It feels more whole. It’s become a real love song. I think it’s found its home.”

Swings Both Ways (feat. Rufus Wainwright) 3:58 Lyrics

Come on out of the sandbox

You’ll get covered in dog-do

Get on off of the see-saw

Say goodbye to your mama, oh yeah

Let’s get high on some pop rock

Pop rock and coke

I’ll blow your sock off

Teach you how to laugh at daddy’s dirty jokes

Don’t hedge your bets, double down

If you want to get ahead in tinseltown

Turn that smile upside down

Happy people don’t have sex

Everybody swings both ways

From the butchest of bandits

The feyest of faggots

And singers with everything they need

Everybody swings both ways

Face it, Robbie, you’re a little bit gay

I’m getting hot on the pavement

Can you get me some grass?

I’ve a certain arrangement

Up the Kyber Pass, oh yeah

Let’s get high with some fruit cake

Fruit cake and tea

And after you’ve done her

Well, you can do me

Don’t hedge your bets, double down

If you want to get ahead in tinseltown

Just follow me you enormous clown

Clever people don’t have sex

Now Robbie

Everybody swings both ways

The bully, the bigot

The giant, the midget

And singers with everything they need

Everybody swings both ways

Face it, Robbie, you’re a little bit gay

“Written by me, Guy Chambers and Rufus Wainwright in a room in the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles one afternoon earlier this year. Rufus has probably written some of the best songs of the last fifteen years and it’s an honour to have him on my record. I think I said ‘everybody swings both ways…’, but then Rufus brought a lot to the table with this song. He works so quickly, and he’s so smart and so succinct that it’s kind of scary being in a room with him - you’ve got to keep pace the best you can. Songs are just stories. We’re now in a period of history where a male straight pop star with a following can sing a song that’s basically saying ‘Yeah, I help up for the other team, if they’re short’. And, in this song, I do.”

Dream A Little Dream (feat. Lily Allen) 3:33 Lyrics

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me

Say "Nighty-night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear

(oh, how you linger on)
Still craving your kiss

(how you crave my kiss)
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

(give me a little ol’ kiss)

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear

Still craving your kiss

Yeah, I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams, dreaming, till sunbeams find you

Keep dreaming, gotta keep dreaming
Leave your worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be

You’ve gotta make me a promise, promise to me

You’ll dream, dream a little dream of me

“A favourite song of everybody’s. I know it from my dad’s record collection when he left, and then from the Beautiful South covering it. It’s probably one of the sweetest ditties ever written. Guy Chambers was playing the piano one night in the Groucho Club and Lily Allen was singing. He asked if she knew “Dream A Little Dream”, which was already planned for this album, and she said it was her favourite song. And I was lucky enough to bear the fruits of that fateful meeting. As soon as she opened her mouth in the studio it was like ‘that’s amazing…’”

Soda Pop (feat. Michael Bublé) 3:19 Lyrics

We’re the love brigade

That sings serenades

Flying in G6 jets

Over woodland glades

These are canapés and not hand grenades

And that’s the choice I made

Go USA

Or Taliban chic

If you got massive hands

Or tiny feet

Life hands you lemons then sell lemonade

It’s the choice you made

So….

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

Bop shoo wop

Soda!

Yoda!

Come enjoy the madness

How you dance through the fire

Is all that matters

How can you resist us

We are the business

So….

We like the birds

We go likely lads

I go on strike

We’re not scab scab scabs

The love we lost when no one stayed

It’s the choice we made

They wanna know

About the clothes we wear

If we swing both ways

And who stays there

As long as I get paid we don’t care

The choice is their’s

Chorus 2

So….

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

Soda!

Yoda!

Yoda

Come enjoy the madness

How you dance through the fire is all that matters

How can you resist us

We are the business

“’Soda Pop’ was written at a ranch just outside Seattle. Whilst there, me and my friends Richard and Scott from Stoke wrote some songs, including this. I was lucky enough to get Michael Buble to sing on it with me. I’ve got a kind of fan boy-ish appreciation for Michael Buble. We’re of a similar age doing a similar sort of thing, and normally I can’t stand people who are my age doing a similar sort of thing – I get very competitive. But Michael Buble is like something from a time capsule – he keeps the flame alive for me of that glamour and the promise and the naivete and the sass of the fifties.”

Snowblind 3:19 Lyrics

I’m snowblind,

Looking at ya,

Let me melt while in your company.

I unwind in your rapture,

I’m an overture,

to your symphony

Time makes time,

A memory between us,

Am I still impossible to read

While the whole world,

Was lookin at ya,

You came and wrapped yourself around me

You feel the sun,

I’m work in progress,

I’m so far away from where I wanna be

You stole my heart,

But my madness,

Is taking the man right out of me

You said,

We could have been so good together,

I complicate so easily

While the whole world,

Was looking at ya,

You wrapped yourself around me,

So wonderful,

Feeling so vulnerable,

You’ll never know,

What you did to me

Can’t disguise,

I’m hiding behind my eyes,

You could have been the whole world to me

“Written with Guy some years ago - it’s always been my thought that it would be on the next swing album. I’d had many, many dates with many, many people and I wanted to be in love and I wanted to be in a relationship, but I also couldn’t keep in my pants. So along the way there were some people I was fond of who fell by the wayside because I couldn’t get it together to commit. The song is saying to someone ‘you’re so full as a person that I’m overpowered by it, and I’m not going to be here long because of it’. This is the original vocal from when we wrote the song."

Puttin' On The Ritz 2:32 Lyrics

Have you seen the well-to-do?

Upon Lennox Avenue

On that famous thoroughfare

With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars

White spats and fifteen dollars

Spending every dime on a wonderful time

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to

Why don't you go where Harlem flits

Puttin' on the Ritz

Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns

Down the levy all misfits

Put-tin' on the Ritz

That's where each and every lulu-belle goes

Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus

rubbin' elbows.

Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee and

See them spend their last two bits

Puttin' on the Ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do?

Upon Lennox Avenue

On that famous thoroughfare

With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars

White spats and fifteen dollars

Spending every dime for a wonderful time

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to

Why don't you go where fashion sits

Put-tin' on the Ritz

Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns

From down the levy all misfits

Puttin' on the Ritz

“I think if you distilled what a swing album should be, it would sound like ‘Putting On The Ritz’. But I think I heard it for the first time in the Mel Brooks film Young Frankenstein  - it used to make me laugh as a kid, and I knew that it made my dad laugh. I later learned that the original wasn’t sung by a man in a Frankenstein outfit.

Famously Fred Astaire, who I think recorded the definitive version, once went for an audition and they said ‘can’t act, can’t sing, can dance a bit’. Similar accusations have been leveled against me too, so I just tried to sing it as least as well as Fred Astaire.”

Little Green Apples (feat. Kelly Clarkson) 3:16 Lyrics

Well I wake up in the morning

With my hair down in my eyes and she says hi
And I hurry to the breakfast table

While the kids are going off to school, goodbye

And she reaches out and takes my hand

and squeezes It and says, how you feeling hon?
And I look across at smiling lips

That warms my heart, and I see my morning sun
And if that's not loving me, then all I've got to say

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't Rain in Indianapolis in the summer time
There's no such thing as Dr. Seuss

or Disney Land and Mother Goose, no nursery rhymes

God didn't make the little green apples,

And it don't Rain in Indianapolis in the summer time
And when myself is feeling low,

I think about your face Aglow and ease my mind

Sometimes I call him up, knowing he’s busy
And ask if he can get away,

Meet me and maybe grab a bite to eat

And he drops what he's doing

And hurries down to meet me, and I'm always late
But he sits waiting patiently,

And smiles when he first sees me,

‘Cause he's made that way

And if that’s not loving me, then all I've got to say
God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't Snow in Minneapolis when the winter comes
There's no such thing as make-believe, puppy dogs or Autumn leaves, no bb guns

God didn't make the little green apples, and it don't Rain in Indianapolis in the summer time

And when myself is feeling low, I think about your face Aglow and ease my mind

“Gary Nuttall, who plays in my band, once gave me for my birthday a Reader’s Digest collection of country songs and it instantly became one of my top ten favourite albums, and “Little Green Apples” instantly became one of my favourite songs. It’s a beautifully reassuring song, sung amazingly well by Glen Campbell and Bobbi Gentry. When you break it down there’s not many women who fit into the category of that song in this day and age. I’d never met Kelly Clarkson but I’ve seen her receive awards and do interviews and I really like her - she always makes me laugh and she’s always very honest. And she’s got a belting voice. She’s a real one.”

Minnie The Moocher 3:41 Lyrics

Folks here's the story 'bout Minnie the Moocher
She was a red-hot hoochie coocher
She was the roughest toughest frail
But Minnie had a heart as big as a whale

Hodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodeho)
Hodehidehidehi (Hodehidehidehi)
Hedehedehedehe (Hedehedehedehe)
Whoaaa (Whooa)

She messed around with a bloke named Smokie
She loved him though he was a tade cokey
He took her down to Chinatown
And he showed her how to kick that gong around

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Oye yoy yoy (oye yoy yoy)

Aye yayaya (aye yayaya)
Hawaa Haha (Hawaa Haha)

She had a dream about the king of Sweden
He gave her things that she was needin'
He gave her a home built of gold and steel
A diamond car with the platinum wheels

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Hodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodeho)

He gave her his townhouse and his racing horses
Each meal she ate was a dozen courses
He had a million dollars worth of nickels and dimes
She sat and counted them all a million times

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Whooaaaa(Whoooooaaa)
Hedehedehedehe (Hedehedehedehe)
Whoawhoawhoawho (Whoawhoawhoawho)

“My act consists of pickpocketing so many people that have gone before me, and I was so pleased to have watched a few Cab Calloway videos before my tour this summer. And this song is the perfect epitome of what I want my whole show to be like - the call and response in this is probably the epitome of perfection when it comes to a tool and a device to have that connection with the people who’ve come to see you. It’s a heavy tune as well – she’s doing opium with some Chinamen, she’s a bit of a fallen woman, she’s a bit of a gold digger. I love singing it every night.”

If I Only Had A Brain 3:52 Lyrics

I can while away the hours

Conferrin’ with the flowers

Consultin’ with the rain

And my head I'd be scratchin’

While my thoughts were busy hatchin’

If I only had a brain

I'd unravel every riddle

For any individ’le

In trouble or in pain

With the thoughts I'd be thinkin’

I could be another Lincoln

If I only had a brain

Oh, I could tell you why

The ocean's near the shore

I could think of things I never thunk before

And then I'd sit and think some more

I would not be just a nothin’

My head all full of stuffin’

My heart all full of pain

Perhaps I deserve you

And be even worthier of you

If I only had a brain

I can while away the hours

Conferrin’ with the flowers

Consultin’ with the rain

And my head I'd be scratchin’

While my thoughts were busy hatchin’

If I only…..

“I knew The Wizard of Oz version first, of course. They’re magic songs. You didn’t have the ability to YouTube songs back then so you’d see a song once when you were nine and it would stick – you probably wouldn’t get to hear it again until you were 14 or 15 when it was on the television again. So they went in once and they stayed there. Later, one of my favourite albums was an album called 20 by Harry Connick, Jr, and in it he does a version of “If I Only Had A Brain” much similar to this version here. It becomes a different song altogether. For me I just equate it to not getting any GCSEs and finding things complicated. That gene that will always feel a little bit stupid gets to cloak itself successfully and be able to come out and go ‘This is what I really think’.  It’s in the guise of a very famous song from a very camp film, but it has pathos for me.”

No One Likes A Fat Pop Star 2:52 Lyrics

I come from a land of kebabs and curries

Second helpings, no worries

Pile the carbs upon the plate

Then one day it’s too late

No breakfast no luncheon

Just carpets I’m munching

A thimble of self-esteem

Glazed nothing for afters

An absence of laughter

The saddest that I’ve ever been

You just can’t be portly

Not this side of 40

Showbiz, a single chin game

Scum paparazzis

And weight police nasties

Have narrowed the hall of fame

No one likes a fat pop star

Pop is a place for the thin

No one likes a fat pop star

We want to hear thin people sing

When I get faint

I chew through my restraints

It’s the best meal that I’ve had all week

If I could eat my own words

I’d tear through the verbs

But nobody pays me to speak

No one likes a fat pop star

Pop is a place for the thin

No one likes a fat pop star

I’m sorry we can’t fit you in

Now you’ve upset me I feel like a snack

A packet of minstrels, a pie and a nap

So what’s wrong with that?

No breakfast no luncheon

Just carpet I’m munching

A thimble of self esteem

Glazed nothing for afters

An absence of laughter

The thinnest that I’ve ever been

“A song that is ridiculous, and that is true. There’s much said and written about famous people and their weight, with all the not-so-great pictures of people on holiday and in the street, and there’s a cruelty that goes along with it. I myself, from time to time, seem to be amongst those pictures and with those people. So this song is an attempt to show the other side of something that can be very painful. You know - tragedy plus time equals comedy.  But if I’d have really realized that there were eighty people in the orchestra playing on that song I probably would have hung Guy Chambers for an absolute waste of money - there’s many sides to Guy Chambers and one side is huge flamboyant daftness. As it happens, it’s a stroke of genius and I’m so pleased and glad that he did it.”

Kinda makes you look ugly

Every word you say

Come up and see me

If you can take the abuse

There’s no room in my band

But while you’re here then lend a hand

And  you can shine my shoes

Shine my shoes

Kneel down boy

That’s why you can’t stand me

I make you so angry

More and more each day

The way you don’t love me

Kinda makes you look ugly

Every word you say

Come up and see me

I kind of like the abuse

There’s no room in my bed

But while you’re here just bow your head

Then you can shine my shoes

Shine my shoes

“Guy Chambers and I started writing together again after a break of about ten years, and ‘Shine My Shoes’ came out of the first batch. It’s in the spirit of a Sammy Davis Jr. song. In the biopic The Rat Pack there’s a dream sequence where Sammy Davis Jr. is dancing against the racists. I’m singing against the haters and the naysayers, giving them my time in the form of a swing song detailing exactly why they should hate me. The smugness will infuriate the haters, and the people who kind of like me will just think that it’s sweet.”

Go Gentle 4:31 Lyrics

You’re gonna meet some strangers

Welcome to the zoo

Bitter disappointments

Except for one or two

Some of them are angry

Some of them are mean

Most of them are twisted

Few of them are clean.

So when you go dancing with young men down at the disco

Just keep it simple

You don’t have to kiss though

Don’t waste time with the morons who think that they’re heroes

They will betray you

Stick with us weirdos

For all your days and nights

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there

Go gentle through your life

If you want me be I’ll be there

When you need me I’ll be there for you

Don’t try to make them love you

Don’t answer every call

Baby be a giant

Let the world be small

Some of them are deadly

Some don’t let it show

If they try to hurt you

Just let your daddy know

When you go giving your heart make sure they deserve it

If they haven’t earned it

Keep searching, it’s worth it

For all your days and nights

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there

Go gentle through your life

If you want me I’ll be there

When you want me I’ll be there for you

Go gentle to the light

I’m gonna be there

I’m gonna be there, yes I will

If all your days are nights

When you want me I’ll be there

When you need me I’ll be there for you

“The first new song Guy and I wrote together – I see it as a Burt Bacharach kind of song. It’s about my daughter, Teddy. ‘Go Gentle’ is a promise of protection. It’s a song that I want to live up to, because it’s actually the most important thing I will do on the planet while I’m here – either be a good or a bad dad. Way more important than four nights at Wembley, three nights at Knebworth.”

I Wan'na Be Like You (feat. Olly Murs) 3:31 Lyrics

I'm the king of the swingers

Oh, the jungle VIP

I've reached the top and had to stop

And that's what botherin' me

I wanna be a man, mancub

And stroll right into town

And be just like the other men

I'm tired of monkeyin' around!

Oh, oobee doo

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be human too

Now don't try to kid me, mancub

I made a deal with you

What I desire is man's red fire

To make my dream come true

Now, give me the secret, mancub

C’mon, clue me what to do

Give me the power of man's red flower

So I can be like you

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be human too

Now I'm the king of the swingers

Oh, the jungle VIP

I've reached the top and had to stop

And that's what botherin' me

I wanna be a man, mancub

And stroll right into town

And be just like the other men

I'm tired of monkeyin' around!

Swing to the left, swing to the right

Put your hands up if you're lovin' life

Oh I'm lovin' life

Swing to the left, swing to the right

Put your hands up if you're feelin' nice

Oh I'm feelin' nice

Oh, oobee doo

I wanna be like you

I wanna walk like you

Talk like you, too

You'll see it's true

An ape like me

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

Can learn to be

Like someone like you

From The Jungle Book, the first movie I went to see at the cinema, at the ABC in Hanley. I’m a big fan of Phil Harris who originally sang it. I think he might be lost in the annals of history somewhere, but Phil Harris happened and he was amazing. People should know about him because he’s cool as. I had no idea, until Olly came in to sing this with me, that Olly first auditioned for the X Factor with “I Wanna Be Like You” and he didn’t get through. Not that long later he’s in the studio recording it with me. That’s a lovely side story.”

Swing Supreme 3:17 Lyrics

Oh it seemed forever stopped today

All the lonely hearts in London

Caught a plane and flew away

And all the best women are married

All the handsome men are gay

You feel deprived

Yeah are you questioning your size?

Is there a tumour in your humour,

Are there bags under your eyes?

Do you leave dents where you sit,

Are you getting on a bit?

Will you survive

You must survive

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

Oh what are you really looking for?

Another partner in your life to abuse and to adore?

Is it lovey dovey stuff,

Do you need a bit of rough?

Get on your knees

Yeah turn down the love songs that you hear

‘Cause you can’t avoid the sentiment

That echoes in your ear

Saying love will stop the pain

Saying love will kill the fear

Do you believe

You must believe

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

When there’s no love in town

This new century keeps bringing you down

All the places you have been

Trying to find a love supreme

A love supreme

“It’s nice to have a bit of my history in here with me, given a bit of a cleaning, some new clothes on it. I’m very fond of the original record - it was an out-and-out pop song and I’m proud and pleased to have it in my artillery - but now there’s a sophistication that it didn’t have before, and some gravitas. It feels more whole. It’s become a real love song. I think it’s found its home.”

Swings Both Ways (feat. Rufus Wainwright) 3:58 Lyrics

Come on out of the sandbox

You’ll get covered in dog-do

Get on off of the see-saw

Say goodbye to your mama, oh yeah

Let’s get high on some pop rock

Pop rock and coke

I’ll blow your sock off

Teach you how to laugh at daddy’s dirty jokes

Don’t hedge your bets, double down

If you want to get ahead in tinseltown

Turn that smile upside down

Happy people don’t have sex

Everybody swings both ways

From the butchest of bandits

The feyest of faggots

And singers with everything they need

Everybody swings both ways

Face it, Robbie, you’re a little bit gay

I’m getting hot on the pavement

Can you get me some grass?

I’ve a certain arrangement

Up the Kyber Pass, oh yeah

Let’s get high with some fruit cake

Fruit cake and tea

And after you’ve done her

Well, you can do me

Don’t hedge your bets, double down

If you want to get ahead in tinseltown

Just follow me you enormous clown

Clever people don’t have sex

Now Robbie

Everybody swings both ways

The bully, the bigot

The giant, the midget

And singers with everything they need

Everybody swings both ways

Face it, Robbie, you’re a little bit gay

“Written by me, Guy Chambers and Rufus Wainwright in a room in the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles one afternoon earlier this year. Rufus has probably written some of the best songs of the last fifteen years and it’s an honour to have him on my record. I think I said ‘everybody swings both ways…’, but then Rufus brought a lot to the table with this song. He works so quickly, and he’s so smart and so succinct that it’s kind of scary being in a room with him - you’ve got to keep pace the best you can. Songs are just stories. We’re now in a period of history where a male straight pop star with a following can sing a song that’s basically saying ‘Yeah, I help up for the other team, if they’re short’. And, in this song, I do.”

Dream A Little Dream (feat. Lily Allen) 3:33 Lyrics

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me

Say "Nighty-night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear

(oh, how you linger on)
Still craving your kiss

(how you crave my kiss)
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

(give me a little ol’ kiss)

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear

Still craving your kiss

Yeah, I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams, dreaming, till sunbeams find you

Keep dreaming, gotta keep dreaming
Leave your worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be

You’ve gotta make me a promise, promise to me

You’ll dream, dream a little dream of me

“A favourite song of everybody’s. I know it from my dad’s record collection when he left, and then from the Beautiful South covering it. It’s probably one of the sweetest ditties ever written. Guy Chambers was playing the piano one night in the Groucho Club and Lily Allen was singing. He asked if she knew “Dream A Little Dream”, which was already planned for this album, and she said it was her favourite song. And I was lucky enough to bear the fruits of that fateful meeting. As soon as she opened her mouth in the studio it was like ‘that’s amazing…’”

Soda Pop (feat. Michael Bublé) 3:19 Lyrics

We’re the love brigade

That sings serenades

Flying in G6 jets

Over woodland glades

These are canapés and not hand grenades

And that’s the choice I made

Go USA

Or Taliban chic

If you got massive hands

Or tiny feet

Life hands you lemons then sell lemonade

It’s the choice you made

So….

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

Bop shoo wop

Soda!

Yoda!

Come enjoy the madness

How you dance through the fire

Is all that matters

How can you resist us

We are the business

So….

We like the birds

We go likely lads

I go on strike

We’re not scab scab scabs

The love we lost when no one stayed

It’s the choice we made

They wanna know

About the clothes we wear

If we swing both ways

And who stays there

As long as I get paid we don’t care

The choice is their’s

Chorus 2

So….

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

I’m gonna sell a soda pop

I wanna sell a soda pop

Soda!

Yoda!

Come enjoy the madness

How you dance through the fire is all that matters

How can you resist us

“’Soda Pop’ was written at a ranch just outside Seattle. Whilst there, me and my friends Richard and Scott from Stoke wrote some songs, including this. I was lucky enough to get Michael Buble to sing on it with me. I’ve got a kind of fan boy-ish appreciation for Michael Buble. We’re of a similar age doing a similar sort of thing, and normally I can’t stand people who are my age doing a similar sort of thing – I get very competitive. But Michael Buble is like something from a time capsule – he keeps the flame alive for me of that glamour and the promise and the naivete and the sass of the fifties.”

Snowblind 3:19 Lyrics

I’m snowblind,

Looking at ya,

Let me melt while in your company.

I unwind in your rapture,

I’m an overture,

to your symphony

Time makes time,

A memory between us,

Am I still impossible to read

While the whole world,

Was lookin at ya,

You came and wrapped yourself around me

You feel the sun,

I’m work in progress,

I’m so far away from where I wanna be

You stole my heart,

But my madness,

Is taking the man right out of me

You said,

We could have been so good together,

I complicate so easily

While the whole world,

Was looking at ya,

You wrapped yourself around me,

So wonderful,

Feeling so vulnerable,

You’ll never know,

What you did to me

Can’t disguise,

I’m hiding behind my eyes,

You could have been the whole world to me

“Written with Guy some years ago - it’s always been my thought that it would be on the next swing album. I’d had many, many dates with many, many people and I wanted to be in love and I wanted to be in a relationship, but I also couldn’t keep in my pants. So along the way there were some people I was fond of who fell by the wayside because I couldn’t get it together to commit. The song is saying to someone ‘you’re so full as a person that I’m overpowered by it, and I’m not going to be here long because of it’. This is the original vocal from when we wrote the song."

Puttin' On The Ritz 2:32 Lyrics

Have you seen the well-to-do?

Upon Lennox Avenue

On that famous thoroughfare

With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars

White spats and fifteen dollars

Spending every dime on a wonderful time

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to

Why don't you go where Harlem flits

Puttin' on the Ritz

Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns

Down the levy all misfits

Put-tin' on the Ritz

That's where each and every lulu-belle goes

Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus

rubbin' elbows.

Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee and

See them spend their last two bits

Puttin' on the Ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do?

Upon Lennox Avenue

On that famous thoroughfare

With their noses in the air

High hats and coloured collars

White spats and fifteen dollars

Spending every dime for a wonderful time

Minnie The Moocher 3:41 Lyrics

Folks here's the story 'bout Minnie the Moocher
She was a red-hot hoochie coocher
She was the roughest toughest frail
But Minnie had a heart as big as a whale

Hodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodeho)
Hodehidehidehi (Hodehidehidehi)
Hedehedehedehe (Hedehedehedehe)
Whoaaa (Whooa)

She messed around with a bloke named Smokie
She loved him though he was a tade cokey
He took her down to Chinatown
And he showed her how to kick that gong around

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Oye yoy yoy (oye yoy yoy)

Aye yayaya (aye yayaya)
Hawaa Haha (Hawaa Haha)

She had a dream about the king of Sweden
He gave her things that she was needin'
He gave her a home built of gold and steel
A diamond car with the platinum wheels

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Hodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodeho)

He gave her his townhouse and his racing horses
Each meal she ate was a dozen courses
He had a million dollars worth of nickels and dimes
She sat and counted them all a million times

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Whooaaaa(Whoooooaaa)
Hedehedehedehe (Hedehedehedehe)
Whoawhoawhoawho (Whoawhoawhoawho)

If I Only Had A Brain 3:52 Lyrics

I can while away the hours

Conferrin’ with the flowers

Consultin’ with the rain

And my head I'd be scratchin’

While my thoughts were busy hatchin’

If I only had a brain

I'd unravel every riddle

For any individ’le

In trouble or in pain

With the thoughts I'd be thinkin’

I could be another Lincoln

If I only had a brain

Oh, I could tell you why

The ocean's near the shore

I could think of things I never thunk before

And then I'd sit and think some more

I would not be just a nothin’

My head all full of stuffin’

My heart all full of pain

Perhaps I deserve you

And be even worthier of you

If I only had a brain

I can while away the hours

Conferrin’ with the flowers

Consultin’ with the rain

And my head I'd be scratchin’

While my thoughts were busy hatchin’

“I knew The Wizard of Oz version first, of course. They’re magic songs. You didn’t have the ability to YouTube songs back then so you’d see a song once when you were nine and it would stick – you probably wouldn’t get to hear it again until you were 14 or 15 when it was on the television again. So they went in once and they stayed there. Later, one of my favourite albums was an album called 20 by Harry Connick, Jr, and in it he does a version of “If I Only Had A Brain” much similar to this version here. It becomes a different song altogether. For me I just equate it to not getting any GCSEs and finding things complicated. That gene that will always feel a little bit stupid gets to cloak itself successfully and be able to come out and go ‘This is what I really think’.  It’s in the guise of a very famous song from a very camp film, but it has pathos for me.”

No One Likes A Fat Pop Star 2:52 Lyrics

I come from a land of kebabs and curries

Second helpings, no worries

Pile the carbs upon the plate

Then one day it’s too late

No breakfast no luncheon

Just carpets I’m munching

A thimble of self-esteem

Glazed nothing for afters

An absence of laughter

The saddest that I’ve ever been

You just can’t be portly

Not this side of 40

Showbiz, a single chin game

Scum paparazzis

And weight police nasties

Have narrowed the hall of fame

No one likes a fat pop star

Pop is a place for the thin

No one likes a fat pop star

We want to hear thin people sing

When I get faint

I chew through my restraints

It’s the best meal that I’ve had all week

If I could eat my own words

I’d tear through the verbs

But nobody pays me to speak

No one likes a fat pop star

Pop is a place for the thin

No one likes a fat pop star

I’m sorry we can’t fit you in

Now you’ve upset me I feel like a snack

A packet of minstrels, a pie and a nap

So what’s wrong with that?

No breakfast no luncheon

Just carpet I’m munching

A thimble of self esteem

Glazed nothing for afters

An absence of laughter

The thinnest that I’ve ever been

“A song that is ridiculous, and that is true. There’s much said and written about famous people and their weight, with all the not-so-great pictures of people on holiday and in the street, and there’s a cruelty that goes along with it. I myself, from time to time, seem to be amongst those pictures and with those people. So this song is an attempt to show the other side of something that can be very painful. You know - tragedy plus time equals comedy.  But if I’d have really realized that there were eighty people in the orchestra playing on that song I probably would have hung Guy Chambers for an absolute waste of money - there’s many sides to Guy Chambers and one side is huge flamboyant daftness. As it happens, it’s a stroke of genius and I’m so pleased and glad that he did it.”

Where There's Muck 4:09 Lyrics

Oh I could tell you

Please try and understand

About this ship left unmanned out at sea

The laughter there is canned

’Cause the jokes are secondhand

God forbid I didn’t plan this mutiny

Before the boat’s a wreck

Send a dove to land on deck

’Cause the noose around my neck is killing me

The anger makes me boil

The mistakes I make are royal

There’s a sadness in the silent part of me

Where there’s muck there’s brass

Kiss my arse

Where there’s muck there’s brass

Kiss my arse

I’m not asking you

I’m telling you

Kiss my arse

Don’t tell me the truth

I know I’ve been uncouth

While, my breath’s a hundred proof I cannot breathe

Calling ship to shore

Don’t know what all the fuss is for

Save the women and the children after me

Before the boat’s a wreck

Send a dove to land on deck

’Cause the noose around my neck is killing me

The anger makes me boil

The mistakes I make are royal

There’s a sadness in the silent part of me

Where there’s muck there’s brass

Kiss my arse

Where there’s muck there’s brass

Kiss my arse

I’m not asking you

I’m telling you

Kiss my arse

16 Tons 2:36 Lyrics

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

“Another song from my youth that is one of my favourite songs ever. I liked the idea of being this manly man: ‘I was born one morning when the sun didn’t shine / I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine’. My granddad worked down the mine, and we were from a community of miners, so I suppose I had a link there. My favourite lyric of all time when I was eight or nine was ‘one fist of iron, the other of steel / if the right one don’t get you then the left one will’. That used to make me feel incredibly hard.”

“Me and Gaz B have written a load of songs together and this is one of them that I’m very fond of. We wrote it in my attic in Beverly Hills between the Take That tour and Take The Crown - I provided the words to a song that he already had, about a man who is besotted by a woman that’s no good for him. She’s not to be trusted but he’s in such denial that I don’t think it will ever become apparent to him until she leaves. I think he’ll probably be stranded at the altar. To me, it sounds like a standard.”
