The Fourth Kind
1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document…until now. Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

thanks for starting this new thread lizzyve, much appreciated :) I have moved all the relevant posts from that thread in messages to this new thread for you guys..look like a great discussion..
I saw inglorious basterds a few weeks ago, it was enjoyable enough but a bit tame for Quentin Tarantino I thought..I was pleased that there was no overdone sex scenes because I took my 14 year old son with me..its what he wanted to see for his birthday soooooooo
have you guys seen "the hangover"? - loved it!

And I agree with you that inglorious bastards was tame for a Quentin Tarantino but maybe that was for the best giving the nature of the film, i admit i didn't like the scalping bit made me shudder, but still a good film all in all.

I bought the dvd thinking it was something good, really regretted it... When I saw the trailer it looked good and it's a M. Night Shyamalan's movie, he did great movies like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs... I decided to give The Happening a chance but I didn't like it at all.
Oh God I sat though that, I too thought yeah that sounds good OMG what aload of bull.

I never got that American " Dude where's my car humor " .. most of the time its just not that funny .... I dont know perhaps I was in a " not funny mood " that particular evening
Oh and another film to avoid, avoid, AVOID is Land of The Lost .. enough said !! gees .. and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind .. ... bad bad bad bad

Close Encounters of a Third Kind .. for newbies or at least more recent films .. I liked White Noise .. War of The Worlds .. Signs .. Sideways .. Lost in Translation - that film totally sucks you in and makes you wanna go to Japan for no apparent reason lol !
and
You've Got Mail - I love Tom Hanks ! and just because its a feel good film .. yes it crass but thats why I like it .. .. :)
Another film not to bother with is Cloverfield .. its one of those ones where when its over .. you and the other person you were watching it with .. just turn and look at eachother with a blank stare .. watch only for the top notch Godzilla / Alien creature thingy .. !!
One of the more disturbing films Ive watched this year is The Strangers ! * gulp * is all I can say .. based on true events too !

Oh ET you just got to love that film lol, War of the worlds is good but don't watch war of the worlds 2 it is dire.
Cloverfield i agree with you, i was sooo disappointed with that film but the alien monster looked good lol it was too much like Blair which for me i mean seriously if your being chase though the streets, buildings falling around you and a 20 foot alien dropping flesh eating spider things at you, would you continue filming.....would you f**k you will be sh**ing your pants as you ran for your life please.
'Castaway' with Tom Hanks that was a good film, I cried when Wilson floated away :o
Now 'The Strangers' I don't know what to make of that film hmmm it kinnda freaked me out a bit because it was based on true events and in this day and age it really could happen.
but if i remember rightly this was a remake of a french film but the strangers were kids and when the police caught them and asked why they did it they said' because we were bored' now that is scary
Now this is a film I can't wait to see, check it out

One movie everyone should avoid .. The Happening .. absolute dirge ! I was compelled to watch it to the end in the vain hope that it would improve .. needless to say it didnt
"The Happening"... I think it should have been called "Nothing Happening". I will write a brief synopsis of it right here:
Marky Mark (sans Funky Bunch) is a science teacher at a high school. I think he teaches biology. It doesn't much matter. There's some other people in the movie, but they don't much matter. They'll all be dead by the time the movie is over and they are all quite forgettable. Marky Mark has a family, I believe. I watched this movie months ago, and really every character was forgettable.
So anyway, people start killing themselves in gory ways. They try to get all sciency with the whole "trees made them do it" thing but fail on account of the fact that if trees were giving off a chemical that "overrides peoples' sense of self-preservation" they wouldn't do heinous things like stab themselves... but then again, people walking into oncoming traffic without looking both directions would hardly be exciting or alarming.
By the end we learn that daisies fail at murdering Marky Mark, and that M. Night Whatshisname can't make vegetation scary or understand science. But maybe this movie is terrifying to people who have severe hay fever.

Just watched 'pandorum' (shushhhhhhh) ;)
And I really enjoyed it was bloody good, not scarey at all, was a bit confused at first but as the film goes on you get the idea of what is happing, good story line.
A brief synopsis
Two astronauts, Bower and Payton, wake to find themselves drifting through space 500 billion miles from Earth and with no memory of who they are, what they are doing, or what has happened to the crew of their 160,000 passenger sleeper ship. They are unable to access the ship's bridge, and cannot communicate with any other members of the crew, including the flight team they are to relieve. While exploring the spacecraft under Payton's radio guidance, Bower encounters several other surviving crew members, and the astronauts start to learn that a terrible event has occurred on board which might have affected the survival of the entire human species.
Their mission is revealed to be one of desperation. Earth, suffering from massive overpopulation, dispatched the sleeper ship and its crew on a 120-year voyage to a new, Earth-like planet to create a settlement. To add even more weight to their mission, one of the survivors whom Payton discovers, Gallo, reveals to him that he was part of the flight crew to receive a message from Earth, stating that the planet had been destroyed and the people on board the ship were the last humans.
Can't really say much more as it will give away the whole plot, but well worth watching i would give it a 6 star rating lol.

I happen to think this is one of the best films about extraterrestrials released in the last number of years .. I dont know why .. but I found it to be more believable than anything that had gone before it .. or which has come since.
It was an excellent re-make .. usually they slaughter them .. indeed most remakes of old films like The Fog and The Amityille Horror were dissapointing to say the least. I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan but he played a good part in this
This however captured my attention .. the website is excellent too !

Omg i was so upset about the fog and the amityville, they really tore them to shreds.
War of the worlds was a good remake but like i said before don't watch the 2nd one omg the biggest load of rubbish ever.

well most times when my partner gets DVD's he doesn't get comedies, usually it's things like, i'll name some, Bronson, Rise of the foot soldiers, Green Street, The crew, and there's a new one with Danny Dyer called Jack Said.
The only reason we watched The Boat That Rocked is because it was about the pirate radio stations in the sixties, some great DJ's came from these boats.

'2012'

This looks great. I want to see this too.
As a big Disney fan I have several Disney films to look forward too. :)
G-Force:

I love these guniea pigs. Ther're so cute!
A Christmas Carol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fYOIO84eV4
The Princess and the Frog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmlZhrmMAhc
And next summer, there will be Toy Story 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khOK39P8Npc
Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VHRz1S_kYI
Tron Legacy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7zEK3Jd-mk
I remember the first Tron, which was in the cinema in the early 80s. It was the first movie to make extensive use of computer animation, and it was just stunning at the time - even though the visual effects were quite simple at today's standards. Now I want to see what they make of it with modern digital effects, and the trailer looks quite good.
G-Force: This is good, a must watch
A Christmas Carol and Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp) I also want to see as do the teenagers in my house lol (Johnny depp ohhhh swoon)

Ok I know films about Aliens can often be dodgy and my first initial thoughts on this .. were ... hmmmm ....... nah ... ummmmmmm .. maybe but its actually quite good .. I say check it out if its on in your local cinema .. I think it may be just about gone .. but soon to be put to DVD no doubt .. so for a cozy weekend .. pizza and a DVD of District 9
District 9 - http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/district9/
This also looks very promising !
Law Abiding Citizen !
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/lawabidingcitizen/
Saw District 9 a few weeks ago was ok better than i expected
as for Paranormal activity what a load of rubbish really, ok there was a few bits that made me jump, but the whole thing is done like the blair witch, and it looks so fake from start to finish, the actors were bad really bad
it was all so false (thank god lol) wa sexpecting something a bit better than that, i had set myself up to be really scared, ******.

Ah Lin .. talk about bursting me bubble over Paranormal Activity mate .. LOL .. although I know what you mean re the Blair Witch type approach ... Cloverfield was a bit Blair Witch stylie too .. I've not seen Paranormal Activity yet as it's not opened in Dublin .. but me thinks I might wait for the DVD after your not so glowing review .. cheers for the heads up on that one hun !
I went to see Couples Retreat tonight .. it was OK .. the usual Dude where's my car American comedy routine .. not so funny .. the only funny moment was when Vince Vaughan and his mate were in the water and the guy spotted some lemon sharks .. panicked and through a bucket of chum over Vince Vaughan so he was floating in a pool of blood n fish guts .. with the sharks circuling .. other than that .. all I could think about was how hungry I was and that I needed to pee so bad .. lol

Went to the movies tonight to escape the trick or treaters (just not up 4 it this year) Watched Michael Jacksons This is it It brought home just how much of a talented artist he was and how he used his status n talents to increase global issues. He seemed well unbelievable that he passed away so sudden like that. God Bless the kids and family. One of my favourite parts was the They dont really care about us Would have been some show Rest In Peace Michael
Seen Legion advertised on a poster Looks Good but isnt out here till March!! Must see if I can get my mitts on it from America

G-Force: This is good, a must watch
G-force brings fly on the wall into a new dimension lol ;)
I watched it yesterday, and it was sooo funny! And so cute! :D The 3D effects were better than in any other 3D film I have watched before. But I had the feeling the effect was wearing off as the movie progressed - they seemed much more 3-dimensional at the beginning. But maybe this is just my eyesight - I'm a little cross-eyed and when I had a visula test at college, they found, that I usually only use one eye, though I have good eyesight on both eyes. And I can switch the other eye on, if needed, but I find it exhausting - so probably it switched off during the film.
And as I had managed to go to the cinema (which doesn't happen very often :D) I went and watched a second movie: Pope Joan. That was a great film, too. It's most likely a legend (at least that's what Wikipedia says), but a good one. And they made the middle ages very believable. I'm so glad I live in our times, where women are allowed to go to school and have a job.
I'm waiting for "The private lives of Pippa Lee". Maybe it is good but I do not know yet.
Watched 2012 last night and I have to say it wasn't as good as I was hoping the story was a bit lame in parts.
The special effects however were bloody brilliant.
I am I have to say a disaster movie buff I love em and i was really looking forward to this movie, but was left just a tad disappointed, I would have liked a little more detail into the run up, it sort of went from 'I thought we had more time, to the whole planet falling to bits in like 60 secs'
It was quite scary really when you think about about it and how something like this could really happen and how the big wigs think only of themselves oh except for the US president and the Italian one, those poor people omg it was not nice.
Ok another one @ Lizzie you will love this one 'The fourth kind' holy crap scare the jeepers out of me lol but was bloody good real good watch it,
It leaves you thinking that it is all true about Aliens and abductions and then you think no its not true, but omg yes it must be. I was sitting with my mouth dropped open though most of it lol
All I can say is I am a believer BUT as long as they leave me alone we will get along grand pmsl
New moon is great, i'm a sucker for these type of films lol (loved the Harry potter films)
Can't wait now for the 3rd one to come out, the way this film ended was great but annoying at the same time, but I guess because i have read the books I knew what would happen so was waiting and it ended, And i was like nooooooooooooo not now arghhhhhh.
A Christmas Carol with Jim Carey was a huge dissapointment basically same old, but I really thought it would be heaps better as Jim was playing scougre, had some funny bits in it but not up to scatch for me.
Surrogates was ok I guess I got a bit confused lol a good film to watch if there's nothing else and your bored, (or maybe thats just me lol)
Tinkerbell the movie awwwww (yeah ok it's a kiddies movie) :o but still awwww, was so sweet its a nice film to watch on a rainny afternoon all suggled up on the sofa, it has a feel good factor to it
Avatar---This film is AWESOME you have to see omg, the effects were brilliant the story was brilliant and the ending was brilliant lol I was really happy with the way it ended.
WATCH IT
Paranormal Entity----Avoid this one like the plague, it was dire, just a fake, trying to outdo the Paranormal Activity one RUBBISH
Planet 51---Yes its an animation but still it is a really good film, very funny
The Princess and the frog----Another Animation, but a musical one at that and very good, it is set in New Orleans and is different to the original 'Princess and the frog story'
Law abiding Citizen---This is another MUST watch film, It has you guessing all the way though,
WATCH
I saw a trailer of Avatar and I'm going to watch it even only for its effects.:)
Avatar & Law Abiding Citizen are two next on my list to watch. :)

Yes, this was lovely. :) I can't get used to this 3D Tinkerbell though. She's not the Tinkerbell from the Peter Pan movie anymore. But her new world is very beautiful. :)
I finally managed to watched The Christmas Carol. :) And I liked it better than I thought I would when I watched the trailers. The animation is stunning. You can see the pores on Ebenezer Scrooge's nose. The 3D effects were great. In the snow scenes I had the impression that a snowflake would land on my face anytime. :D The mood of the story is captured beautifully and they took their time with nice long shots in some scenes. However I did get severe motion sickness from all these long and fast flight scenes.
I still haven't seen 2012, and I also want to see Avatar and The Princess and the Frog. :)
And here are some more Disney movies I want to see in the new year:

Harry Brown is a good film, Michael Caine is brilliant in that, also that taking of pelham 123, very good I enjoyed that as much as the original
Alice in wonderland 3D
Saw this last night and I have to say I was quite disappointed with it
(Apart from Johnny Depp who was just fab as the hatter)
The 3D effects were not that great most of the time it was just like the old pixar picture reel things (you remember those red binocular type thing that you put a picture disc in and turn it and saw the 3d pictures)
Well anyway I expected things to come flying out of the screen, but alas no.
The story is set more to 'Alice though the looking glass' (which I prefer) with the chess pieces and the jabberwocky and the white queen, (played by Anne Hathaway)
Helena Bonham Carter was ace as the Red queen but Mia Wasikowska who played Alice was very poor and made the character seem very dull and lifeless.
Would only watch again if I was seriously seriously bored.
Valentine's day movie
Romantic comedy, hmm well....This film skips back and froth between numerous characters as each one falls in love falls out of love etc etc, but it's the type of film that you know from the start what is going to happen at the end, and OK i'm a sucker for happy endings, but really this was a bit pukey.
There was some funny parts to it like Anne Hathaway Character and her secret job as a s.ex phone host.
I would watch it again if it shows on TV and nothing else was on.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
Now this was really really good, albeit a bit cheesy in parts, the visual effects were great.
This film was made for the teen population, really can't see the teens of today wanting to see it.
but younger children yes.
As always the book is a lot better than the film and the squeal book 'The Sea of Monsters' is also a great read.
The acting was a bit lame in parts but the story was alright some good humorous moments too
Medusa was brilliant.
The books and the film are fab and if you know about and love Ancient Greek mythology,(which I do, one of my specialized subjects hmm :o ) then this is a most see.
would watch again, no worries.
Did You Hear About the Morgans"
Did you hear about the Morgans? Trust me, you don't want to.
Ok maybe a bit harsh, but I was disappointed really, had some funny bits in it, but the story line was a bit lame
Hugh Grant is classic with his dry sense of humour, got to love the man.
Would only watch again if I was bored stiff.
Hachiko: A Dog's Story
Let me tell you about this film, Wow.
I heard about this story a few years back, It’s based on a true story
And I never saw the oringal film, so when this remake came along I thought ok lets watch, the fact that Richard gere was in it helped I have to say.
Well I thought the start of it was quite boring really, (apart from the cute likkle puppy awwww) but carried on watching, and let me just say by the end and even two hours after I was crying like a baby,
Even now when I think of the dog I want to cry.
Anyway if this story don’t make you feel sad or cry then you have a heart of stone or I’m just a soft touch.
I don't want to put up any links as it really gives the story plot away and you really have to watch it to get the jiff of it.
I would watch this again and again, but then again maybe not don't think i could cry that much.
Must watch film.
I saw a very sad Up in the Air. i do not know what to think, to recommend or not.
Maybe the next will be a strange new Alice in Wonderland.

I forgot this thread was here..:)
recently we went and saw Avatar 3D..what can I say, I don't want to sound like the mob here but what a great movie..the special effects were fantastic and the emotions I felt when the marines were destroying the place..it was all real to me in that moment..I was so tired the day we went and was worried I would fall asleep or something but nope, from the minute the movie started till the very last second I was alert, it didn't seem like 3 hours either..
It kinda took 3D as we knew it to another dimension, in the cafeteria scene early on it was amazing, like I was actually sittin there listening to that guy speak..amazing so obviously I would recomment this one..:)
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
I took my 7yo son to see this for his birthday, it was really the only choice and I wasn't really keen on watching it but went anyway, glad I did cause I enjoyed it..yes the acting was a bit bad in parts and sometimes the effects overpowered the story but that didn't stop my son and I sitting there bug eyed with our mouths open..and Medusa..OMG brilliant effects with that one..It is aimed at teens but is one of those movies which eveyone could enjoy and like linny, I kinda have a thing for mythology, particularly Norse but the Greeks are pretty cool too:D
today I will watch the Notebook..my uncle has the DVD and yesterday my mother and aunty were telling me what a great movie it was and it was a shame I hadn't seen it..They say I will cry but pfffffffft crying is for weenies:D It seems like I am the only person on the planet who hasn't seen it yet so I will let you know what I think of that one shortly..

Im not there yet with Jaoquin Phoenix LOVED IT
It’s exploration into the dark heart of someone falling from grace is so well portrayed and captured, that it holds a very harsh mirror up to our current celebrity worship society.
It shows the ownership we feel towards celebrities. How angry we can become when they decide to shed their image, or change direction. And how we thrive on watching them crash and burn rather than being concerned.
The Tree of LIfe - Brad Pitt, Sean Penn amongst other amazing actor
Have no intelligent words to describe as yet other than ****ing brillant. It left me emotionally drained and it is one of the best i've seen in a veryveryvery long time.

It is! I should share the warning that it's a bit slow becasue some people get bored with these type of films....
It's nice though, the acting is excellent (everyone is great and F.Highmore never ceases to amaze me!) and each take is visually delicious!

* Watch the Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWX34ShfcsE)
* Check the imdb page (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780504/)
Well...I loved it to bits! (to be honest I knew I would)
-Amazing photography
-Great soundtrack that added to the feelings the director wanted to tranfer to the audience ...Listen to a preview of the songs here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9J4R4KYv-s) "A real hero" playing on the background ...It couldn't get better!
-Superb acting! To be honest I expected nothing less from Ryan Gosling...I've been a big admirer of his talent and work for some years now and I'm more than happy to watch him get the recognition he deserves..at last. Gosling and McAvoy , at least among the actors of similar age, are the two I'm certain we're going to place a few years later among the best actors of our time.
To make you trust me , know that I've never had a crush for neither of them :P
* Roger Ebert said about Ryan Gosling :
" He embodies presence and sincerity. Ever since his chilling young Jewish neo-Nazi in "The Believer" (2001), he has shown a gift for finding arresting, powerful characters. An actor who can fall in love with a love doll and make us believe it, as he did in "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007), can achieve just about anything "

Tnx for the recomendation! This film has been calling me for some time now, but there's always sth. that gets in my way when I want to go to the movies to see it. Hope that it's still playing in the movies though (if not-well there's always a way :D ).
And that soundrack!! Reminds me a little of the soundtrack for the Mission: Impossible, to be honest don't really know why (combination of the ballada and electronic sound I suppose).

By the way...Drive didn't just won a place in the my favorite-movies-list but it also introduce to a book that's now one of my favorite novels! The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of classic comic books created by the Belgian artist Georges Rémi (1907–1983), who wrote under the pen name of Hergé. There was a cartoon series too, but now they've made a 3D film of it. Here's a link

also watched MELANCHOLIA last night with Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourgh (my girl crush), Keither Sutherland and more.... a film by Lars Von Trier
At first i thought Lars also made Tree of LIfe because they are very similar films though nope.
Well.... its was excellent. Very arty and wont be for everyone though like Tree of Life keeps you thinking waaaayyyy past the ending.
Kirsten played an amazing part. Her character made you feel depressed, lonely, lost.....
Charlottes character really draws you in...she just wants her sister to be happy and tries everything to do so
Then comes Melancholia, a planet heading towards earth. The ride of emotions it takes you on was really tretcherous but peaceful at the same time.
Loved it and is one i'll watch again.

Then what do you think of Tom Cruise playing the lead. "Oh, I think now I'll be a rock star. A few months of music lessons & voila!" I'm probably going to see it tomorrow, so I'll let you know.
Saw Avengers last week, it was great; funny & action - very entertaining.
Jude Law - The Holiday;) -Ahh, Lovely!!; good movie.
James Bond - a serie that I always watch. It does not matter how good or how bad it is. I do not know why. Maybe because of a handsom actor, unbelievable actions, super gadgets and one million other things.

I saw at the movies some music ads: RW TTC, 1D and something else (on a small screen near the cash desks).

I saw the movie The Life of Pi. It is amAzing how it's shot; the scenery is amAzing & the acting....also amAzing. There will be an Oscar nomination.
I really liked Pi; he had his own way of thinking & made his own choices. Be prepared for a fairly long intro where you might feel it's a propaganda film for religion:rolleyes:, but then the 'tiger part' begins & wow; the portrayal of the situation is intense. If your a person like me who takes movies to heart/mind/body a little too much, it took a while to recover after & feel normal to drive. But then I'm not normal, so no one else will have this.:D
I'd like to watch the Bafta and Oscar nominations. Some titles will be the same ones.
