Ok people, I have a questions for all of you, this has been bugging me for ages, I didn't feel it was right to ask this, for sometime I have been bursting to know what other fans think, so here goes,
I am always hearing that Robbie fans are so opinionated and can't see past Robbie, other times I hear that if you tell someone you are a Robbie fan they roll their eyes as if to say oh God, some say that Robbie fans don't really know anything about music other than Robbie, so
Question 1, are Robbie fans too opinionated
Question 2, how do you think Robbie fans are perceived
Question 3, do Robbie fans moan too much about how Robbie is perceived
Question 4, are Robbie fans scared of negative publicity
Now please don't shoot me down, I am only asking to see if any of you have encountered the same type of reactions as I have.

That's well cool :cool::cool:
Hi there :) I'm also interested in what others will say.... but here's what I think:
Q1: I'm a Robbie fan and I don't really know anyone near me who is a Robbie fan too.... but what I think is that fans tend to be too opinionated (and not only Robbie fans, but fans in general). I personally do not know anyone who would be too opinionated and I guess I'm not opinionated either.. I listen to Rob's music a lot and if someone does not like it and tell me about it then I'm ok with that... Fortunately most of my friends, even though they are not fans, they do like Rob's music, I'd even say that thanks to me ( ;) ) they listen to him more often and get to know songs after which they start to appreciate him...
Q2: I have a friend who would always say near me that she hates Robbie & his music and she doesn't understand how I can like it... but it's just one person who says that... others (my close friends, boyfriend, sister, parents) have nothing against Robbie, some songs they like more, some less... and of course they have nothing against Rob's fans (perhaps this question is rather for British fans.... because as I said, I think that here, in Poland, Robbie's music is well received and really appreciated (on the radio, tv - never heard a bad thing about him...) ).
Q3: and do you moan too much about how Robbie is perceived? I don't... (there will always be press which will say bad things about Robbie. But there are also those who treat him fairly and are positive about him, and I think they are in majority... Of course I don't like to read bad reviews about Rob, but REALLY these days I find most of them positive... so is there anything to moan about?).
By the way, great questions cozerocks, glad you asked them because I'm really curious what will be some Brits' answers ;)

Very good questions.
Robbie fans can be opinionated, but i think it is more a sticking up for him with me. Alot of people I know like his music but since he came out with the new album, its always 'is he on drugs'. 'He's too cocky' 'He's an attention seeker' etc etc. Then I have to defend him, and when I'm finished, they then call me obsessed.
I also don't think we moan about how he is perceived, but stick up for him. As a Robbie fan, we know more about him than the general public. We've read the books etc.. I think he is perceived very unfairly by some, and it is from those that know nothing about him. Andwe may be seen to be moaning but we are not, just fed up with the horrible things that are said about him.
I love the fans on this site, theres a real intellect about everyone and you can have a real grown up discussion. Whereas on another site I go on (not RW) its totally different. They are grown up people acting as teenagers.

I agree with you all so far :D

I agree with Jazz and add British fans tend to be very polarised about Rob - they either love him or hate him. They love him because human nature tends to want to protect those preceived to be good and defenseless. (ie fight the negative and unfair UK press)
They hate him, because here is this cocky lad from Stoke, who seems to be god's gift to women and has too much money - ie jealousy.
If you actually sit either group down, few of them ever mention his music! I like most of Rob's music and happen to think he is a gifted and highly talented individual. And I am encouraged by the fact that a bloke from Stoke did good. Well done to him I say - good on yer!
However, many British people rather than praise talent or intelligence, would rather dismiss and/or attack it. It is one of the many reasons why I am ashamed to be British - that and the fact we cant cope with a few inches of snow!!!
Question 1, are Robbie fans too opinionated
No - everyone is entitled to their opinions, however extreme - unless it encourages hatred and /or violence
Question 2, how do you think Robbie fans are perceived
Hopefully no more or no less than other fans - the bigger the star, the wider the range of fans
Question 3, do Robbie fans moan too much about how Robbie is perceived
Nope, because the UK press is very unfair and unregulated - other countries dont have this issue
Question 4, are Robbie fans scared of negative publicity
No, but we tend to get upset if the negative publicity is false or inaccurate

Well I have to admit I have defended Rob against unfair criticism from people who think they know a lot about him but don't really, yes once I have defended him I am called obsessed, this used to be upsetting back in the earlier days but as time has gone on I now understand that it is just ignorance on their part.
Great feed back though guys

I think as in any group of people you're going to get very opinionated people who can't see past Robbie and others who are willing to consider an alternative opinion. I don't think that is restricted to Robbie fans though.
I don't have any friends who are Robbie fans which is the reason I joined Robbie forums in the first place. But I wouldn't go out of my way to defend him to others who don't like him. Mainly because I wouldn't give the other person the satisfaction of knowing they had riled me ;) I know he has the Marmite effect.
I adore him. Doesn't mean the rest of the world has to.

Im with robstoke
It was at christmas that I disovered he had a 82 yr old fan n my sister n brother in law had been listening to music while cooking the feast;) They had a mix of music including some Robbie tunes n at dinner angels was on.
Theres alot of closet fans out there that like robbies music n tend to get swayed on the bad/false press thats said about him on a personal level.
Just like anyone would do you tend to try n rectify a false truth thats said about someone.
Would I be wrong n saying that Robbie himself has said he has erm over the top fans? Or words to that effect.?

cozerocks good questions :)
We love Robbie, but any of us ever made a craze for Robbie and since then they treat us crazy or obsessive. Many people can not accept to Robbie, as the journalists and they always try to have the best news. Robbie is a star and therefore always sells and the journalists write out nonsense about him, we talk as if we knew Robbie lifetime. And we hurts that many lied to us about Robbie´s life. Why do we have to keep quiet? we know that is a lie, and when we defend Robbie. obsessives treat us.
the theme of "fan" is too complicated to explain to someone who has no idol.: /
sorry about my english I speak spanish cause i´m Argentinian, i hope that you can understand what i wanna say, sorry :/

I do not think Robbie fans are any diff from any others, you defend him when needs be out of a sort of distant family type of loyalty so to speak and you do tend to get a bit crazy when someone is getting between you and the object of your desire, like security etc. When is Robbie next on live does anyone know?,I think France next week.he seems to have made a concerted effort to disapear at the moment, first all the marriage rumours for Valentines day now nothing.I have a feeling he might have eloped and come back married, the press was all decoy tactics and RW does act very much on impulse,r else he is doing s`thing with T/T or he and Ayda have decided to slow things down and be just good friends for the time been.I am only guessing from past knowledge of the Robtser.

This s just me guessing,I have no real idea of course but these are what I would have guessed in the past but now I would say marriage, break in the sun or another one which I wont say as it would be not good and I would hate it for him but whatever I wish Rob and Ayda well.

the only real bad things people have said to me here are Oh, hes gay and hes a shortass..I mean, who gives a flying toss and if thats the best they can manage..well........it is probably the same for most fans, my sister in law pointed out to me that I always poo poo her fav band, she was right..just because I don't like them don't mean I should try to take away from her liking them, but just between you and me, they really are bad:D
I do think though, that the mention of RW will generally have more negative comments than positive! I don't defend him, its their opinion but it does annoy me a tad..if there are soooooooooo many who dislike him, why then does he sellout arenas the world over in minutes?
Sometimes I can't contain myself and I reply - I don't care if he's gay or not - I don't wanna marry him! All I know is that he is a terrific singer and songwriter... more! He's an amazing human beeing.

Well I had a moment just after the xfactor final, at work I could hear some of them talking about it and I waited and sure enough it came, oh Robbie Williams no he wasn't very good, he's finished isn't he, now I was very calm and didn't get involved but it was a hard thing to do.
Question 1, are Robbie fans too opinionated
To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know a lot of Rob fans as such. I think anyone who is a "fan" of any particular band or artist obviously does have a strong opinion for the positive. Otherwise, why listen to them. Are Robbie fans more opinionated than others is the question. I think they are very loyal to him, that much I have noticed.
Question 2, how do you think Robbie fans are perceived
By and by again I would say that they are perceived as being very loyal.
Question 3, do Robbie fans moan too much about how Robbie is perceived
Absolutely and rightly so I say. Unless you delve below the tabloid press's perception of what Rob is, you couldn't get an accurate portrayal of the man. (not that I have ever met him or am likely to may I add). Perception and reality get blurred a lot these days, but he has been doing what he does for a long time and if Rob can cope with, then we fans should as well. Mind you, it doesn't stop us from sticking up for him occasionally when the time is right or maybe enlightening some people.
Question 4, are Robbie fans scared of negative publicity
No. If it is a true or accurate portrayal of something. Some say any publicity is good publicity. It gets your name out there. I disagree with that. Bagging someone or their work just for an agenda is not what people want to read. Basically people read or listen to news for information. If that news has been distorted or figures fiddled or are blatant lies, then they shouldn't be published in the first place. If that were to happen though, it seems as though two thirds of especially the British press would cease to exist.
Interesting questions Coz!

Great questions cozerocks. I'm from Aus so we don't get the same amount of gossip as you guys in Europe but what we do get is generally negative and incorrect which is very annoying.
None of my close friends are fans and used to stir me relentlessly but since he's been quiet they've actually been asking me where he is & what's he up to and have admitted they have missed his music on the radio and I now have quite a few who want to go to a show if he tours out here again (OOOOOooohhhhhhh PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-lol)
I also have a foolproof way of converting doubting females when they step through my front door. I just put on 'The Robbie Williams Show' DVD and show them How Peculiar and suddenly it all becomes clear to them why I love him so. So feel free to use my technique and let me know how you go. LMAO :p

I think the one thing i know most about Robbie fans is that we're very defensive over our popstar. He gets criticised alot and we're always ready to defend him. We have to be opinionated don't we. We put up with the rolling eyes or comments when we tell people that we're a Robbie fans because it's worth it, we know how great he is. I also think that many of us aren't afriad to point out flaws either. We know he's not perfect - but we don't like unjust criticism from the press who seem to do it just for the sake of it.

You see if someone said that to me about Robbie I would just laugh. :D All the time people know that fans are going to get defensive they will try to wind them up about it. and there's no point.
I know he's not gay and he's 6 foot one. Why does it matter so much what others think?
You could argue until the cows come home but it wouldn't make any difference to the other persons opinion. Especially someone like Robbie who does seem to split opinions so radically. :)

Question 3, do Robbie fans moan too much about how Robbie is perceived
Question 4, are Robbie fans scared of negative publicity
Now please don't shoot me down, I am only asking to see if any of you have encountered the same type of reactions as I have.
So
Question 1: I think Robbie fans are opinionated but no more than the fans of any other band or artist.
Question 2: I think a minority of Robbie fans are obsessed with him, a fact I learnt from his book, a few seem to think they own him, but the majority of Robbie fans are like the fans of any artist. They just want to listen to his music and go to his gigs and concerts. There's nothing wrong with that. Is there?
Question 3: I think there's a lotta negativity in the press which isn't deserved. He is one of England's biggest stars. Yet the papers seem to look for anything to bring him down and I know people who aren't Robbie fans but also think the press bring him down. So I suppose if I read your question again there is a certain level of deserved moaning.
Question 4: The only reason that his negative publicity could scare me would be if it pissed him off so he refused to make more music because of the negativity. There's not much originality in mainstream music anymore. And I wouldn't say that he's unoriginal with songs like Bodies, Last Days Of Disco, and Advertising Space.
I agree with Jazz and add British fans tend to be very polarised about Rob - they either love him or hate him. They love him because human nature tends to want to protect those preceived to be good and defenseless. (ie fight the negative and unfair UK press)

Just adding to the discussion another point. Back in the late 90s there was the infamous feud, (which I believe the press if not completely made up, at the very least fuelled,) between Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams.
The UK tabloid press are world famous for building up a star, only so they can knock them down when they havent got anything else better to "report". Building up Rob sold papers, knocking him down sold even more papers.
What I have failed to understand is, why couldnt the UK have 2 or more big stars? There was plenty of room - it's not as if the country was over run with famous male singer-songwriters at the time. As a result all music lovers have lost out and the press are repeating this stupid mistake. Should Rob decide enough is enough, who is there to fill the void?
I am not suggesting that Gary Barlow is in the same league as our dearest Rob, but I do believe that our musical choices are being dictated by the media. So having seen what the press did to Gary and other artists of his status and ability, can you blame fans if they become over-protective of Rob?
cozerocks
13-01-10, 10:12 PM
I don't think you can blame the fans for being more than protective of the stars that they love, just think what would have happened if for instance Rob had taken the bashing from the press over the xfactor first appearance to heart and said blow it all it's not worth it, we would have lost one of the best artists in the world yet again, may be it's all about fan power, if we want our stars we make sure we show the press they can't beat what the fans want.

Question 1, are Robbie fans too opinionated
I don't think so.
But the fact is there is two different reactions when i say i'm a RW's fan.
Most of the time, people recognize his fabulous singer, songwritter and entertainer's talents, and, specialy women, how charming he is.
But a small part of people (particulary men) says he's only a boy's band singer for teenager, and if i like him, it's because i'm in love, etc......
I always answer the same thing: "You, i'm sure you've never heard one of his album or seen one of his show, otherwise you wouldn't say that".
And then, they feel a bit stupid, and stop the conversation.
Question 2, how do you think Robbie fans are perceived
Here in France, we 've got a big problem: journalists don't like sucessfull guys.
Having success, and saying "yes, i want to succed in what i do" is bad percieved.
Each time a french singer is questioned about his album's sales or general success, he always says "i'm not doing this job to have success, i don't mind money..........."HYPOCRITE!!!
I hate that.
In France, each sucess is suspect.
So being fan of a man who is clearly happy to have success, who is searching for that, made us a kind of "aliens". But there is a lot of aliens here.:D
Question 3, do Robbie fans moan too much about how Robbie is perceived
Here as anywhere else, french tabs quote all rubbishes said in english tabs.
So people think he's still under drogs, etc........
But in serious papers, there is a lot of good reviews about him and his music.
So, as i've read before, no we don't moan too much, we're just fed up to read and to hear again and again the same rubbishes.
Question 4, are Robbie fans scared of negative publicity
In France, we've got a proverb. I'm going to try to translate it:
"Calomniez, il en restera toujours quelque chose"
"Let's slander, it will always left something about it"
I hope you can understand.
Yes i'm scared about negative publicity.
Because most of the time it's libel and what can we do against that?
And even if it's not, who is perfect enough for never make mistakes.
Concerning us, no one is behind us to report all our stupidities.
But in the case of Robbie (or one of his famous "colleague") everything take another magnitude.

1. STARTED LISTENING: probably in 2010 when I knew he was rejoining TT-wanted to know more about him so started watching YT clips & became hooked!
That's interesting - I was the direct opposite to you :) - knew nothing much about TT until the Progress tour, never bought a TT CD, never seen them live but since Rob joined I've learnt loads about the boys and come to appreciate them. :)
I've bought a couple of Mark Owen's solo songs, bought BW.
I'm really hoping they stay together as a fivesome in the future. It's been lovely to watch their friendship this summer. :)

1) WHEN YOU STARTED LISTEN ROBBIE?
- July 1ST 2006, only 11 years old :)
2) WHAT SIGNS OF PERSONALITY YOU LOVE IN ROBBIE?
- His cheekiness, his brilliant sense of humour, the way he cares about other people incl. us friendlies :) and the romantic side of him too really ;) Actually, everything about him is very very lovable ;)
3) YOUR FAVOURITE VIDS TO WATCH ?
- When we're talking about DVD's, I love the show at The Royal Albert Hall! Got to be a fave for me :) But I'm sure the new Progress live DVD will be high on my lists of faves too, when it's released... if we're talking vids from youtube, I love loads of Interviews with him... you know, he's just so charming and makes you see how lovely he really is :) I especially love an interview with him, from the Cars 2 premier in Munich, where he talks about a lot of things, in only 5 minutes... He's just so cute in that one :D
I could go on forever (Don't worry, I won't) But I gotta mention the video blog he made for us earlier this month.... definitely a fave!! :D
4) YOUR FAVOURITE ROB'S SONG?
- I've always loved Come Undone... But lately I've been crazy about Nan's song, and She's The One... Can't choose though, I love every single one of them :D

Wow-you've got 4 lads to learn about!! They are all lovely in their own way & I think it is such an amazing story-if it was a movie everyone would say -'that wouldn't happen in real life!' :D
I have only been a fan of TT since they came back in 2005, my favorite tour is the Beautiful World although I didn't go to that-very sexy! Sorry-I am aware that this is a Robbie forum!!

I've often thought that. :)
It is an unbelievable story with all the ups and downs/twists and turns of all the members.
And I don't think it's over yet either.
Another chapter coming soon I think. :)

I feel the same! They are so inspiring, aren't they?! :) I love how they're like brothers... they seem very close now, and that's the way I want it to be! It's so lovely to see them all together, enjoying each others company :)
1) WHEN YOU STARTED LISTEN ROBBIE- Take That and Party. Robbie was my very little sisters first love and she use to set quizzes for my other sister and I about TT ... before long we were hooked ;)
2) WHAT SIGNS OF PERSONALITY YOU LOVE IN ROBBIE? Generosity, vulnerability, wit, charm.
3) YOUR FAVOURITE VIDS TO WATCH? Ah back to my littlest sister ... she use to tape EVERY appearance TT made and we would have 'sister' nights in pouring over them. I loved those nights.
4) YOUR FAVOURITE ROB'S SONG? Come Undone, Better Man, Handsome Man.
So
I know what you mean Cozerocks. I was very surprised when my mates, they are mostly rock and even metal fans told me they have a big respect for Robbie. I won't forget the time we were at a rock bar and LMEY started to play and they all seemed to like it very much. After the song I asked them their opinion about Robbie, I was already a fan, and they told me some very good comments and they were all respecting his career. After that night I am not scared or to express it better I don't have any concerns about whether I will reveal I am a Robbie Williams fan or not.
And from what I've seen so far Robbie Williams fans are not malicious as Take That fans are, something that really irritates me. If Robbie fans are scared of negative publicity? :D Robbie don't seem to care about negative publicity and so his fans.

My Answers :
1) When I was six years old
2) Kindness, loyality to his fans , Sense of humour , Looks (he) , realistic person and everything basically !
3) I love watching the live vids, Advertising Space, You Know Me, Eternity, Shes the One, Angels, Make me Pure
4) Love them all , but i do love angels, eternity, advertising space, morning sun, shame, Win Some loose some , you know me, bodies, Jesus in a camper van , hot fudge , place to crash, gay friend and make me pure, Revolution :) looking forward to to the new album
The thing about being a Robbie fan is that you'll always have people telling you "he's gay" (that's the one that i get the most), "he's on drugs", etc. and we are obviously going to defend him. I don't get mad anymore except when they say his music is bad. Then they tell you you have an issue when they're the ones that started it and you're just defending him. In Argentina they tend to bother fans with Amalia Granata.
I think we are used to negative publicity so at least I'm not scared of it but I do get mad when it's not true. And most of the time they make at least one mistake (here in Argentina) when they're talking about Robbie and that ruins the rest of the news for me.
