I know this may seem intrusive but rob seems to smoke a lot. This is obviously bad as may reduce his time on this Earth, accelerate the pace his vocals decline with age and his live performances. These are still brilliant however i thought perhaps if we started a thread giving reasons why rob should stop smokingh and urging him too he might take notice when on the site and use it as an intipece.
Other reasons causes cancer and if robbie is going to start a family it could reduce his time with them in his old age. It will allow him to produce music for longer and perform it and hes quit tougher substances than nicotine.
Some of u may think im an interfeering whatever but its in robs best intrests!

You´re absolutely right. It would be awful,if Rob develops cancer. We all want only the best for him and this would not be the best!So please,Robbie, stop smoking!
Oh Please his a big boy now
He knows the dangers of smoking like all smokers know
And the more someone tells/asks you to stop the more you do it.
Its the only vice he has left, leave him be and if and when he wants to stop then so be it
his choice .
It is certainly not up to us to tell him what to do, and I'm sure if he read this he would phsl
and say a few naughty words.
Leave the man be, there is enough people out there invading his life without it happening here too

so maybe people who have given up could give everyone here some advice:)
I am ready to quit but not sure how to go about it, I have cut down so much over the last 5 months and now feel its time to make the jump! how hard is it to do? Miss, you mentioned patches, is that what worked for you? my mother got some tablets from the doctor and they worked for a while but now I see she is smoking again. I think that when I do give it away I won't be able to have a conversation on the phone ever again:D thats when i automatically grab a *** and take the phone outside..without even thinking!
Has anyone tried being hypnotised, or does the old fashioned 'cold turkey' work best..I have cut down in preparation..I'm hoping that makes things easier, I don't really want to affect everyone around me if I get angry or something either. What about food, is it true that you eat like there is no tomorrow..
I have tried many times to just stop but for some reason I don't have much success..
I am really interested to know how it all works, what to be prepared for etc.

*groans* So the swear filter doesn't like the slang term for cigarette..Starts with F and ends with G..:D
I went cold turkey. Smoked a packet a day for 10 years. Depends what your incentive is I think. I had a chest cold, was rushed to hospital and had emergency surgery that night - a laparotomy for a twisted ovarian cyst. Believe me, wake up and cough your lungs up just after having your stomach cut open and it is a good incentive to stop. Haven't had a cigarette since that day, 20 odd years ago. ;)
I did get the shakes really bad for about a fortnight - and had difficulty with having a coffee and no cig - also what do you do with your hands??? Other than that it was OK within a couple of weeks.
so maybe people who have given up could give everyone here some advice:)

I have been Hypnotised, but didn't work, went cold turkey and eat for England.
But everyone is different, you really have to want to do it for YOU and YOU alone for it to work
I guess I wasn't ready to part with them, I have cut back a bit so thats a start and at the moment I'm just getting my head around the fact that I want to stop, if I say it enough times though out the day, I might get there.
The last time I stopped my kids near left home lol grummpy had nothing on me.
but i don't stop trying and I hope to succed one day, mind you that day could come soon if they put the prices up again *Groan*

I've been a smoker for 30 years, and the thought of giving up scares the hell out of me.
Basically I don't know any different, I was 11 when I started. I've managed to get down to 10 a day.
I had hypnotherapy when I was 19. It stopped the craving, but I just missed smoking so started again.
What will make me give up? I honestly don't know. I would like to be a non smoker.
I have had family members die from smoking related causes.
One very close family member who had quit 9 years ago, got lung cancer and died, so I think sometimes whats the point, even if I quit I could still get cancer.
I look at my son and feel very guilty, how could I be doing this to him? and still I don't quit. He tells me I should quit.
Willpower is what is needed to quit, and I just don't know if I have enough.
My hubby had a heart attack nearly 2 years ago, he was a smoker (about 6 a day) but has never smoked since. He would never tell me to quit as he knows it is up to the individual. You can never tell a smoker to quit, they have to do it themselves.
This is probably the longest post I have written in here. :o Sorry

I used to complain endlessly to Uncle Derek about him smoking cos I didn't like him doing it. He was barred from doing it in the house but if smoke came in from the window or if the silly man had left the door open I'd tantrum and whine and cough and cough real hard cos I wasn't happy about it. He used to do it in his car and he said that I don't have no say in that cos he owns the car, (he doesn't own Meanie Mummy's house, he ain't got no money  ), and he'd make me sit in the back breathing in his fumes. I'd whine so hard and make him feel uncomfortable. I'd whine to Meanue Mummy and tell her to tell him. He'd have the window open but that wasn't good enough. I still smelt it. I told him he'd make me and Meanie Mummy and me die from passive smoking. I told him I wasn't happy. He quit smoking after a few years of having me on his case. He was sick of hearing me moan. :)

When's lent? I'll poke you and ask when the time comes just to make sure. :)
I sometimes wonder if smoking is as bad for you as the do-gooders would have us believe.
There was the case in the paper of the woman who died at age 115 and had smoked 15 a day every day since here teens.
My two grandma's had smoked all their lives, strong ones for a long time with no tip, and they both died in their mid 80's of totally unsmoking related illnesses.
What really really annoys me is when a very overweight person lectures me about smoking :( I rarely drink and keep slim with a sensible diet and exercise.
I don't think we were put on this earth to be perfect in every way.
I also think it's in your genes whether you smoke or not. My two sisters take after my mum - all 3 hate smoking. I take after my dad who chain smoked - as a child I would lie next to him on the sofa smelling his smoke and thought it was lovely LOL However, my dad did stop smoking when he was about 60, and I've never found out the true reason why, as in whether it was a health warning from a doctor.
My sister gets worse coughs and chest infections than me and she's never smoked.
It's all confusing.
At the end of the day - each to his own.
As for Robbie - surely we should be congratulating him on giving up the booze and drugs rather than focusing on one negative thing. He's looking fantastic at present so smoking can't be harming his heath that much !

It's all relative - some people can chain smoke for decades and nothing happens to them. Others can be passive smokers and contract lung cancer. It depends on a huge number of factors.
Yes Rob should be allowed to do what he wants with his own body and money when it comes to smoking. Not really bothered either way. He is a big boy now, he knows the risks to himself and others around him.

Well said,
I have asthma and know i shouldn't smoke, but my mate has asthma too and she don't smoke and she is worse than me
Like you my grandmothers smoked non tips one died at the age of 77 from leukemia
My other one died at 93 from wait for it....natural causes
And my grandpa smoke a pipe he died at 87 from again natural causes
My parents don't smoke, my father did but stopped when I was born
My sister smokes and is always coughing and has colds
My brother never smoked.
I smoke in one room of the house, and the kids are not allowed in that room, so i don't pollute the whole house with smoke, and touch wood none of them smoke or want to.
I thinks drinking and drug taken is more bad for your health than smoking (sorry but it's true)
And I know of people dieing from lung cancer who never smoked at all.
we are all born with cancer cells and it just takes one little thing to trigger it off, some are lucky
some sadly are not.
Yes the ads and stuff i hear of scare me, but obviously not enough to make me stop, my will power is crap.
I enjoy a ciggie and sometimes I hate them lol
but that is my only vice.

Same for me Kazza, non smokers around me all get bad coughs and chest infections. I very rarely get a cough, but when I do it is only after I have had a bad cold. Then all I get is people saying I have a smokers cough.

@linny and kazza: My Granddad died of cancer of the throat and lung cancer due to smoking (and it was a horrible death).
Look at any statistic and you'll see that smokers have indeed a far higher risk to develop a smoke-related cancer. That you know a few exceptions (everybody knows some ;) ) doesn't refute the statistics. Oh, and have a look at the black lung of a chain smoker, I'm sure, there'll be one somewhere on the internet...
A research of the german Robert-Koch-Institut came to the conclusion that only 10 to 15% of patients with lung cancer were non-smokers. I don't suppose that the data in other countries differ much from that.
Another data: Ca 16% of the male smokers and 9% of female smokers are developing lung cancer (still Germany). Doesn't seem that much, but on average only 70 men and 30 women out of 100 000 are developing lung cancer.
The thing is, as a non-smoker I'm minimizing my risk of cancer. That doesn't mean I'll never develop one. But at least it'll be not a smoke-related one.
Of course people are different and some are more prone to get an illness of some kind. But do you really think it is somehow better to elevate the risk to get an illness artificially, just because others have this risk already anyway?
I can't stand it when people are playing down the risks of smoking because of a few people they know and who never fell ill with a smoke-related illness. Are you doing that for your own sake, to make yourself feel better about it? If yes, remember that perhaps children/teenager are reading this and could think "oh, well, then smoking isn't that dangerous at all" and start it.
This said, I won't tell anyone to quit smoking. As you said: Each to their own. You know what and why you're doing it. I have my own vices to fight. But please, please, don't play down the very real risk!
These persons who do not smoke also do not like (hardly tolerate) smoking plus all these medical statistics - there are some reasons to quit smoking.

Good God no one is playing down the risks of smoking, we are just stating some other facts too
thats all, (which we are entitled to do).
I'm sorry to hear about your Grandad.
I know the risks, I know people who have died from smoking related illness also. I'm not daft
but with everything you do there is an element of risk
You cross the road you can get hit by a bus etc.
And yes I hate having stuff shoved down my throat about smoking, and people telling me to stop.
and lets be fair here if children do read this and they decide that they will smoke then they don't have the brains they were born with, sorry but thats a fact.
children/teenagers normally start smoking though peer pressure not because they read stuff on a website.
Teenagers take drugs and drink and have underage sex more than taking up smoking
AND ALL carry risks.

makes sense
My view is that unless someone is 100% perfect in terms of what they eat, how much they drink, how much exercise they get etc. they have no right to lecture somebody else who is less than perfect in their choices.
Smokers are all clubbed together in one big "stupid" category. But to me, smoking is like drinking - there are so many varying degrees of it. If you do it in moderation, choose low tar cigs, and make sure your smoke is not affecting anybody else - is it really so bad in the big grand plan of things?
For a lot of people smoking is a coping mechanism. Better that than turning to drugs or risking liver damage with too much booze. Even comfort eating is as damaging to health if done to excess.
I think we should all be more tolerant and understanding of what other people choose to do :)
Robbie might have the incentive to quit if he has a little baby in the house - or there again he might decide to go outside or to a part of the house a long way from the baby. At the end of the day, it's his choice.

You know, I wouldn't have written anything weren't it for the "other people are getting cancer as well, so smoking can't be THAT bad"-remark ;) :p. Smokers carry definitely a far higher risk. I don't intend to shove anything down anyone's throat. But if a statement is wrong it's wrong.
I have to correct you: the low-tar-cigarettes have no influence on the probability to develop cancer. The only thing that's reducing the probability is indeed moderation. The more cigarettes so. is smoking the higher the chance to develop cancer. Up to a 20- or 30-fold risk in very heavy smokers in comparison to non-smokers. In my opinion that's a lot...
And I didn't say smokers are "stupid", I know that it's often a coping mechanism like other people are eating chocolate or drinking alcohol or whatever. I have my own coping mechanisms and they aren't THAT good either, I won't deny that :p... But I couldn't weigh cigarettes against alcohol for example. Drugs are worse, I think. It's rather difficult to consume drugs with moderation :p. But alcohol? I'm drinking a glass from time to time and I don't think that's as bad as smoking...
People who don't smoke, or don't feel the need to smoke, are very lucky, but I don't think they should "demonise" or lecture those who do - who undoubtedly know the risks.
However, you'd never find a smoker being violent or causing a car accident like heavy drinkers. Or puffing away (literally, not on a ciggy LOL) having to walk upstairs or something cos' they are carrying far too much weight. As for drugs - well, we don't need to go there.
I agree Robbie seems to smoke a hell of a lot - so many pictures of him show him with a cig in his hand, or at least clutching a packet. But if he didn't smoke - what else would he turn to to calm his nerves?
Society seem to feel they have a right to lecture smokers as if they are the only ones with a problem - it's that that gets my goat. Take the pictures/writing on cig packets - you don't get pictures of eyes affected by diabetes on a box of cakes, or a damaged liver on a bottle of booze.
We can't all be perfect and personally I think life would be a bit boring if we were.
Can I just say how much I've enjoyed this discussion though :)

All with moderation - alcohol, chocolate, then it won't hurt... And I'm completely against driving after drinking. I'm never doing it. As for the puffing away because of too much weight - I guess there are smokers as well who have to do that ;) - but probably just really, really heavy ones.

That'd be an idea, wouldn't it? :D Would probably totally minimize the consommation of alcohol...
Can I just say how much I've enjoyed this discussion though :)
Thanks for that. :)

my 6 year old upped the ante yesterday...they have this bus which travels from school to school..its life education and its about drug education as well as healthy living and its age orientated so my little fella learnt yesterday about smoking and basic bad effects...he asked me to try to stop! what can I do when those beautiful blue eyes are pleading with me..
I rang the quit line and they are sending me a quit pack..I have to make a date in the future to give it away and I opted for them to ring me once a week to see how Im doing and give support if i need it..I can ring them anytime day or night if if Im having trouble..soooooooooo now to make that date, wonder how long into the future they mean..lol..December sounds good.:D
Leanne, think of the money you can save! All of that can then go towards tickets (if and when a tour is announced). That should be incentive enough! If he doesn't tour till next year, you have have saved enough to fly around the country and see him everywhere!
You can do it! ;);)

yes..considering if we get a tour of Oz my plan is to travel to other states to watch him with my buddies..I will use that as my incentive for sure..
I'm ready to give it a whirl...the pack should come Monday so then I really need to get serious about it all...and if people here are asking how Im doing that might be another incentive to keep it real..lol..what if I get angry, If I get angry then the whole house is angry and thats never good...now, the food thing..yeah, I can handle the eating thing, couldn't possibly eat any more than I already do..:D

It may be a waste of money, and yes I do think they are too expensive, but at the end of the day my kids have a lovely home to live in, food on the table, clothes on their backs, and presents they want for b'day and xmas, whats left is mine to do as I please with.
Urm, but what about me? Your own children may be provided for but why should I miss out?

Oh Please his a big boy now
He knows the dangers of smoking like all smokers know
And the more someone tells/asks you to stop the more you do it.
Its the only vice he has left, leave him be and if and when he wants to stop then so be it
his choice .
It is certainly not up to us to tell him what to do, and I'm sure if he read this he would phsl
and say a few naughty words.
Leave the man be, there is enough people out there invading his life without it happening here too

I just assumed from the stories that he was trying to get fit enough to play in the match for Socceraid. The rest I took with a big pinch of salt.
Although it's a relief to know that the tobacco won't be destroying his sperm now. I'll be able to sleep easy tonight ..........

It would be brilliant if he wanted to stop smoking of his own volition, but Ayda fell in love with a man who smokes, and should be careful about trying to change him - it could back fire in years to come.
The thought of Robbie getting through a tour without his "crutch" is difficult to comprehend.
Personally I think Ayda should be pleased and grateful he's beaten his drugs and booze demons and not push him too hard, given his addictive personality.
I know loads of blokes who smoke who've got a few kids. I'm not advocating smoking but the nanny state is going too far.

I don't for one moment suppose that she has put her foot down and demanded that he stop smoking - I would like to credit him with enough sense to know that if they are trying for a family, things like cutting down on smoking make sense. Who knows, he might have 'ordered' her to take folic acid!

Awww, he doesn't have to shoot me. I won't attack his dogs.
girls relax.i did not made this topic to turn it to a -sperm- conversation.i think that now his voice would be softer as it was in 2004,2005.and also he would be not in danger for cancer.that means longer living and better appearance.dont worry :a 36 year old man surely can make children.he would have problem if he was older.
Cutting down on smoking, if you can't stop, is sensible at any time, but particularly when wanting to start a family - and even more so when babies come along. At least Robbie has the option of going outside for a smoke without getting frozen or drenched as is the norm in the UK.
However, in this particular article "Robbie said" () he wants to give up altogether. Robbie with no vices? On the other side of the coin that would be like the pope doing crack.
I take all these articles with a pinch of salt, or should that be snuff....... When a law is brought in that "sources" have to be named our newspapers will be half empty. And celebs won't be left tearing their hair out at all the rubbish which is written about them.
Robbie and Ayda seem to make a good team - I'm sure they encourage each other to make the best of themselves, and they want to be the best they can for each other. However, human beings are by nature imperfect - to strive for perfection in terms of weight, diet, alcohol consumption, cigarettes, exercise taken etc etc blah blah blab is unrealistic.

That made me wonder - does anybody think Robbie's voice has deteriorated over the years - either through age, or a combination of age and smoking?
I have to say I think his voice on Morning Sun is absolutely beautiful, but there are a few times over the whole album, especially the chorus of Won't Do That, where I cringe a tiny bit.
As far as I know he's never had any professional voice training, and when you think how much hammer his vocal chords have had over the years it's surprising his voice is still as strong as it is.
