Not unexpected, but still sad.

I loved North and South - watched every re-run of it in the 80s. And Ghost was brilliant, too.

A colleague of mine, who is an oncolgist told me he had one of the most aggressive kinds of cancer, and when it's discovered, people usually have a very low life expectancy. She thought it was almost a miracle that he survived so long, and we both admired his fighting spirit and his attitude towards this disease, which certainly has contributed that he survived so long. It's so sad the miracle is over now.

RIP, Patrick!

Oh yes and i really liked him. Before he died, he was ill with cancer. Its really sad that people have to die - still - i think that holding the dignity, respecting the life in every storm in life - its the only way to live (forward).

Everyone of us, is just a "little" life in a chain of generations - and humanity exists since a lot of ages - and still humanity go forward and achieve new ages and centuries. A lot of changed for good, but still its not enough, cause we see a lot of injustice in our society and hurts damaging the Nature.

Well, i hope Patrick is resting in calm, i hope for his soul that he is in heaven now.

Amy Winehouse: Stars pay tribute to star's legacy
by Tom Bryant, Daily Mirror 25/07/2011

THE world of showbiz yesterday paid tribute to Amy’s legacy and shared their sadness and shock.

Close pal Russell Brand said: “Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy’s incredible talent.”

Tony Bennett, who worked with the singer in March, added: “She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent and has come to such an early end.

“She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance.”

Mark Ronson, who co-wrote and produced Amy’s most successful songs, said: “She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life.” Close friend Kelly Osbourne wrote: “I can’t breath I’m crying so hard I lost one of my best friends. I love you for ever Amy and will never forget the real you.”

Sir Elton John called her “one of the most seminal artists this country has ever produced.”

Ronnie Wood said: “It’s a very sad loss of a very good friend I spent many great times with. We feel privileged to have known her and we will sorely miss her.”

And Robbie Williams wrote: “Tragic, tragic waste. The addictive force is so, so, so, so strong. There but by the grace of God go I.

“She was clearly trapped here and had to go home.”

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb, but together we can do it taking one day at a time. If you can help somebody who's in sorrow or in pain then you can say to God at night my day was not in vain. And now I am contented that my life it was worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way I made someone smile. When you are walking down the street and you've got me on your mind I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind. And when you feel that gentle breeze of the wind upon your face, that's me giving you a great big hug or just a soft embrace. And I will always love you From that land way above, will be in touch again soon P.S. God sends His love XXX

Amy Winehouse 'Back To Black' Is Highest Selling UK LP

Amy Winehouse's hit LP Back To Black has become the highest-selling UK album of the century so far.
Winehouse's 2006 record has replaced James Blunt's debut album Back To Bedlam to become the 21st century's biggest selling LP - claiming the top spot after her tragic death at the age of 27 last month.

The Official Charts Company has confirmed that Amy's Back To Black - which returned to No.1 for three weeks following her passing - has shifted a cool 3, 259, 100 copies, beating Blunt's sales of 3, 241, 118.

Meanwhile in other Amy Winehouse news, her father Mitch has announced that he plans to continue singing in memory of his daughter, and will perform a tribute gig for the Rehab hitmaker at the Royal Albert Hall.

The 60-year old will support Bros singer Matt Goss at the prestigious London venue, where his set will raise money for the charity he has set up for Amy.

In a statement obtained by the Metro, Mitch said: "Through setting up the foundation in Amy’s memory, I have to come to realise that I can sing for Amy and raise money for her foundation, so when Matt Goss called me to ask me to open his show at the Royal Albert Hall this was a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness for the foundation."

"I immediately felt a strong rapport with Matt and he told me ......

Amy Winehouse VMA Tribute Led by High-Energy Bruno Mars Performance

MTV's VMA tribute to Amy Winehouse did not feature a certain U.K. songstress with big hair and an even bigger voice (ahem, Adele); nor did it include a certain Mother Monster, who, upon hearing of Winehouse's death, described just how much hope Amy had given her. Rather, the VMA dedication to the deceased "Back to Black" singer was led by men, some who knew her and some who simply admired her: friend Russell Brand, collaborator Tony Bennett, and soulful singer Bruno Mars.

Amy 'Five Times Over Drink Drive Limit' At Time Of Death
At an inquest into her death, a verdict of misadventure has been given...

15:04, Wednesday, 26 October 2011

Amy Winehouse was more than five times over the drink-drive limit at the time of her death.

During an inquest into the Rehab hitmaker's death today, a verdict of misadventure was given after a coroner heard how Amy went on a huge drinking binge on that fatal night, despite being sober for three weeks.

According to The Mirror, police recovered two large bottles of vodka and one smaller bottle of the spirit at her Camden home, where her body was found on 23rd July.

The inquest heard how the 27-year old had 416mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, meaning she was five times over the legal drink driving limit of 80mg.

A post-mortem carried out on Winehouse's body found that she had huge amounts of alcohol in her system, which could have stopped her breathing and sent her into a coma.

No illegal substances were found during the examination, and her ....

New Amy Winehouse Album 'Lioness' Due in December

Amy Winehouse's first posthumous album, Amy Winehouse Lioness: Hidden Treasures, is due out December 5 via Island Records. Assembled by producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, the 12-track set contains previously unreleased songs along with alternate versions of her previous hits.

The unreleased tracks include "Halftime" and a cover of bossa nova standard "The Girl From Ipanema," both of which date back to the 2002 sessions for Winehouse's debut album, Frank. "Like Smoke" is a duet with Nas that came about following Winehouse's mention of the rapper on "Me & Mr. Jones," from 2006 sophomore album Back to Black. "Between the Cheats" is a new song recorded in May 2008 as a potential selection for her third album.

Lioness will also feature covers of the Shirelles' "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You" (originally written and recorded by Leon Russell), and a reggae take on Ruby & the Romantics' '60s doo-wop song "Our Day Will Come." Alternate versions of previously released tracks include .....

RIP Basil D'Oliveira, ONE OF CRICKETS GREATS

One September day in the late 70s, Basil D'Oliveira was sunning himself on a Spanish beach with his family. A Spanish TV crew approached him and, in halting English, asked him for an interview. A bewildered D'Oliveira said: "But you don't know who I am," only to be told: "Oh yes, we all know about you."

Basil's fame and popularity always amazed him. An essentially shy, private man, he remained deeply grateful to the British public for the support he received over the events of 1968 and continued to get until he finally retired in 1980.

I cannot think of another England cricketer who was applauded so warmly for such a prolonged period of time when walking out to bat - and, in his last season, even when he had failed, as he returned to the pavilion.

The British sporting public recognised a hero when they saw one. And Basil was exactly that.

His significance will never be lost on those who maintain that sport and politics should never mix. But his popularity and personal example marked him out as a rare human being.

Those from a younger sporting generation will wonder what all the fuss is about today, now that Basil's sad days suffering from Parkinson's disease are finally done.

Five Test hundreds and an average of 40 in 44 Tests is impressive, but no more than that. He did score runs when needed - he was no 'flat track bully' cashing in when there was little pressure. But you can say that about many other international cricketers.

Yet Basil was unwittingly one of the most influential cricketers of the 20th century - because of the colour of his skin.

He was 'Cape coloured' and he had to escape the dreadful limitations imposed by apartheid in the 60s to prove himself as a cricketer. The great cricket commentator John Arlott, a dedicated opponent of apartheid, managed to get Basil a Lancashire League contract, then he graduated to Worcestershire and finally made it into the England team when he was approaching middle age.

In August 1968, Basil made 158 against Australia in the final Test of the summer. When England won dramatically on the final day, with Basil taking a crucial wicket, we all waited eagerly for the news that he would be in the England party to tour South Africa that winter.

Shamefully, a few days later, the selectors bottled it and Basil wasn't picked. It was a major news story and became even more significant a week later when Tom Cartwright dropped out through injury and Basil was eventually selected.

The South African government, appalled at the opprobrium in Britain, cancelled the tour, saying the squad had been picked by the Anti-Apartheid Movement, not the MCC. South Africa would not play international cricket against England again until 1994, with the D'Oliveira affair the catalyst for a sporting isolation that lasted more than 20 years.

During that time, many great South African sportsmen came to admit publicly that apartheid was obnoxious, that massive social and political changes were long overdue in their country - but everyone agreed that the dignity and integrity of Basil D'Oliveira were highly influential. He became a leading light for the instruments of change, without saying a word.

Basil relied on his professional performances and personal warmth to cement his place in the hearts of the British public. In private - especially after imbibing a beer or two - he was less discreet, but he handled himself superbly in public. He was a hero to so many around the world, even to those who had no defined views about apartheid.

In 1980, when I collaborated with him in his farewell to cricket, we deliberately called his autobiography 'Time to Declare'. In it, he stated for the first time that he was glad that the proposed South African cricket tour to England in 1970 was called off for fear of public disturbances.

And on a personal level, it was a huge thrill that Arlott contributed the foreword to the book, after being such a help to Basil down the years and a thorn in the side of the establishment through his anti-apartheid stance.

I recall standing with Basil at the Newlands ground in Cape Town during the Test against England in January 2000. He pointed to the trees that he used to stand under when watching the cricket as a boy coming from Signal Hill, dreaming his dreams.

He ruefully mentioned how comfortable the seats for the white spectators were and that he always supported South Africa's opponents in those days, just like Nelson Mandela.

He was wryly amused that he'd just been voted one of South Africa's 10 greatest cricketers, even though he had never played first-class cricket in his home country.

"You should have seen me when I played at Signal Hill in my 20s," he smiled. "I was some player then. I was over the hill when I came to England."

Well he truly must have been some cricketer then. His crucial hundred in that Oval Test demonstrated his flair for the big occasion. He just had to get a big score after a poor Test series to get on that plane to South Africa.

That morning he rang his wife at home in Worcester and said: "Pull up a chair, turn on the TV and enjoy it, Naomi, because I'm going to be there all day."

He was, and he made his highest Test score. Yet the cup of triumph was dashed from his lips twice in a few days - first by the pusillanimity of the England selectors, then the intransigence of the South African government.

Yet you can't measure Basil's status in terms of England tours, championship honours with Worcestershire, the joy of seeing his son Damian succeed him in the Worcestershire side, his OBE award, and his coaching career at New Road that had much to do with the development of Graeme Hick.

He may have been in the twilight these past years, failing to recognise many who came to his nursing home to pay their respects, but he knew how loved he was around the world, especially in the city of Worcester, where he had been revered since arriving there with Naomi in 1965.

His significance will never be lost on those who maintain that sport and politics should never mix. But his popularity and personal example marked him out as a rare human being.

The dignity of the ordinary man could not be circumscribed by the evils of apartheid, as millions of remarkable people demonstrated. And Basil D'Oliveira was one of those.

So, so sad and tragic. Why the hell does the best always have to go first?:o
I really had been shocked because just a few days before Whitney had been on TV and it was said that she is much better and on her way up.
And just because she had to meet this s*... ass*..... Bobby Brown who made her taking drugs and drink. I loved her amazing voice - the best in the world. I can recall that there always had been a kind of battle "Whitney vs. Mariah" and for me it always had been an easy decision. Whitney is the better singer. Now she sadly passed away and we only have her videos, her songs, her voice left.
My dearest thoughts are with her family, especially her daughter Bobbi and her aunt Dione Warwick. All the strength they need may be with them.
I´ll never forget Whitney and I am so grateful to have seen her once in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. Simply BRILL!
Blessings to all that have sadly passed away (if it is the boy/girl next door or Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse etc.).

Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack aged 66. The singer had been on a solo tour this month and had complained of chest pains the previous evening and was admitted to a hospital in Stuart Florida.

Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child, though he got his big break in 1965 when he joined The Monkees. The group had a hugely successful television series, and a slew of hit songs in the late 1960s. At their peak in 1967 they sold more records than the Beatles.

RIP Pc David Rathband

Hundreds of people have gathered to honour the life of blinded Pc David Rathband at a cathedral service.

Among the mourners at St Nicholas' Cathedral, Newcastle, were policing minister Nick Herbert, actor Tim Healy and Northumbria Police chief constable Sue Sim.

The officer's children Mia, 13, and Ashley, 19, were seated at the front of the historic church.

Six pallbearers from the police, fire and ambulance service carried his coffin through the cathedral.

His twin Darren, who organised the service as a celebration of Pc Rathband's life, wept as he placed a hand on the coffin, which was draped in a union flag, covered with lilies and his police cap.

Pockets of shoppers and well-wishers stood silently and watched outside as the cortege drew up outside the cathedral led by a police car.

Darren Rathband arrived in the hearse and got out and watched as the pall-bearers from each of the three emergency services brought out the coffin and carried it the short distance into the church.

Orange flowers down the side of the vehicle spelt out Pc Rathband's call sign - Tango 190.

His brother was joined by Pc Rathband's children in front of the cathedral door.

He gave them words of comfort before they followed the coffin inside.

British-born celebrity hairdresser Vidal Sassoon dies (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18008302)

British-born celebrity hairdresser Vidal Sassoon has died at his home in Los Angeles, aged 84.

A police spokesman said officers went to the stylist's home on Wednesday morning to confirm the death. He said Sassoon had died of natural causes.

Sassoon is regarded as one of the best-known hairdressers of his generation.

He is credited with revolutionising haircuts in the 1960s, and developed a popular line of hair products under his name.

The creator of the "Bob" hairstyle, he is best known for his simple, shaped cuts, ending the bouffant styles trendy in the 1950s.

One of his followers was Mary Quant, the famous British fashion designer who popularised the mini-skirt.

Sassoon opened his first salon in his native London in 1954, later expanding to the US.

His private life attracted as much publicity as his business success. He divorced three times and married his fourth wife in 1992.

TOKYO (AP) — Bass player and songwriter Donald "Duck" Dunn, a member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame band Booker T. and the MGs and the Blues Brothers band, has died in Tokyo. He was 70.

Dunn was in Tokyo for a series of shows. News of his death was posted on the Facebook site of his friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour. Cropper said Dunn died in his sleep.

Miho Harasawa, a spokeswoman for Tokyo Blue Note, the last venue Dunn played, confirmed he died alone early Sunday. She had no further details.

Dunn, who was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1941, performed on recordings with Eric Clapton, Neil Young and many others, and specialized in blues, gospel and soul. He played himself in the 1980 hit movie "The Blues Brothers."

He received a lifetime achievement Grammy award in 2007 for his work with Booker T. and the MGs.

RIP Donna Summer

The undisputed 'Queen of Disco' has died after a battle with cancer

Disco legend Donna Summer has died from cancer at the age of 63, according to TMZ, the American gossip website which first broke the news of Michael Jackson's death in 2009.

With hits like Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, and particularly the huge international hit I Feel Love, Summer embodied the spirit of the disco era more than any other artist except perhaps the Bee Gees.
Indeed, so great was the impact of that 1977 collaboration with Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, particularly its ground-breaking synthesized backing track, that it can safely be said to have revolutionised the entire genre.

David Bowie, who was recording in Berlin at the time, recalled first hearing it in an interview with Kurt Loder: "One day in Berlin ... Eno came running in and said, 'I have heard the sound of the future.' ... he puts on I Feel Love, by Donna Summer ... He said, 'This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.' Which was more or less right." Donna Summer: 1948 - 2012

She was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on New Year's Eve 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts.

As one of seven children raised by devout Christian parents, her first experience of music came in her church's gospel choir.

But she was singing in a variety of Motown-inspired girl groups by her mid-teens before, having become strongly influenced by Janis Joplin, she joined a rock band called The Crow.

Although the band didn't last long, it proved to be Summer's first step on the path to Europe and eventual disco superstardom.

Having auditioned unsuccessfully for the part of Sheila in hippie musical Hair, she was nonetheless offered the part when the production toured Europe.

She took it and moved to Germany for several years, settling in Munich, where she learned to speak fluent German and starred in a number of musicals, as well as doing session work on the side to make ends meet.

In 1972, she married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer, an anglicised version of whose surname she kept for the rest of her life, and gave birth to their daughter Mimi the following year.

It was while working as a backing singer that she first met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. Having struck up friendships with the pair, she gave Moroder the "love to love you baby" lyric which he eventually turned in to Summer's first huge disco hit, despite its being banned in many countries for its suggestive lyrics and erotic delivery (she sang it as she imagined Marilyn Monroe would).

Love To Love You Baby peaked at number two in the States and was the first in a run of hit singles and albums which not only defined the disco era, but laid much of the groundwork for the techno music of the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1979, she became the first female artist in history to have three US number one singles in the same calendar year when MacArthur Park, Bad Girls, and Hot Stuff all hit the top spot.

As the 1970s progressed into the 1980s, Summer modified her sound to move with the times, eschewing the pure disco of her previous output in favour of more rock, new wave, and R&B-flavoured material.

The stylistic move had little impact on her popularity initially but she experienced her first flop when 1984's Cats Without Claws became her first album not to attain gold status.

When its follow-up, 1987's All Systems Go, also failed to go gold, she hired Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who were then at the height of their Hit Factory success, to produce her next album, 1989's Another Place and Time.

Summer's American label, Geffen, refused to release it, but it was a minor hit in Europe and spawned the top five single This Time I Know It's for Real.

Summer continued to embrace new musical styles such as new jack swing into the 1990s but never again reached the heights of her 1970s heyday.

In 2008, Summer released her first studio album of fully original material in 17 years, entitled Crayons. It sold respectably and achieved three number ones on the US Billboard Dance Chart in I'm A Fire, Stamp Your Feet, and Fame (The Game).

Summer was living in Nashville, Tennessee at the time of her death. She leaves three daughters and four grandchildren.

Stallone's actor son dies at 36

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u136/cozer45/misc/AAD4821A35706BE5E338F695C44.jpg

The 36-year-old son of Sylvester Stallone has been found dead, leaving the actor grief-stricken, his publicist said.

Details surrounding the death of Sage Stallone were not immediately available.

"Sylvester Stallone is devastated and grief-stricken over the sudden loss of his son," publicist Michelle Bega said in a statement.

"His compassion and thoughts are with Sage's mother, Sasha."

Los Angeles police said they were dispatched to investigate a death at a home on Mulholland Terrace but could not confirm the person's identity or offer details.

Coroner's officials also said they were in the initial investigative stages.

Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone's children and co-starred with his father in two films.

"Sage was a very talented and wonderful young man, his loss will be felt forever," Ms Bega said.

He was the first of two sons Stallone had with first wife Sasha Czack.

Sage Stallone made his acting debut in 1990's Rocky V and also appeared with his father in 1996's Daylight. He also directed the 2006 short Vic, which was screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Entertainer Max Bygraves has died in Australia

The entertainment world has paid tribute to showbiz giant Max Bygraves.

The 89-year-old comedian, singer and variety performer, whose catchphrase was "I wanna tell you a story", died peacefully in his sleep at home in Hope Island, Queensland, Australia.

Born Walter Bygraves in south London in 1922, he adopted the name Max after his hero Max Miller, going on to appear in dozens of films and stage shows during a long-running career.

His close friend, comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, said: "He was one of the greats of British entertainment. I have nothing but lovely memories of him. He was a big, big influence on me."

Actress Barbara Windsor told the Sunday Mirror: "The public absolutely loved him. Some people thought he just walked out on stage and did his thing, but he had the whole package. He was incredibly talented. He was one of the good ones and he'll always be remembered."

Comedian Ken Dodd described Bygraves as a "magical performer". He told BBC News: "He was absolutely brilliant - an excellent comedian, a very good singer and quite a good actor. Yes, he was a giant of showbusiness, a wonderful, wonderful man."

Veteran entertainer Des O'Connor said Bygraves had been a massive influence on his own career and had given him valuable guidance when he started out. He said he wrote to him asking him for help and he was touched when he replied with a two-page handwritten letter full of advice. O'Connor said: "I used to use it as a rule book when I was starting out and over the years everything he's said has been helpful to me."

Bygraves had two daughters and a son with his late wife Gladys, known as Blossom. She died in May last year after battling a long illness. He is also survived by several grandchildren.

The couple had moved from their home in Poole, Dorset, to Australia several years ago to take advantage of the warm climate.

Bygraves's agent Johnny Mans said he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago. Mr Mans added: "His death is a great loss to the entertainment profession and a great loss to all of his friends in the industry."

RIP Clive Dunn

Had it not been for his short stature and elf-like face, the actor Clive Dunn, who has died aged 92, would have liked to play juvenile lead parts. But his loss was the audience's – especially the television audience's – gain. Though he was master of all sorts of old-man parts, he will be remembered with most affection as Lance Corporal Jones in the BBC television send-up of life in the wartime Home Guard, Dad's Army (1968-77).

His dithery butcher, slipping a few favoured lady customers some choice cuts from under the counter and then, in his spare time, trying his ineffectual best to keep order for the officious Captain Mainwaring, became such a popular figure that his catchphrase, "Don't panic!", delivered in the agitated tones of a running chicken hanging on with difficulty to the last shreds of its dignity, was repeated with guffaws in homes throughout the land.

The air of good nature with which he imbued the role removed any offence from some of Jones's other catchphrases, such as his constantly reiterated explanation, derived possibly from service in Africa, of why the enemy disliked the bayonet: "They don't like it up 'em, sir!" When in the late 1970s, British sausage manufacturers wanted their first competition, staged at Alexandra Palace, north London, to be opened by someone who suggested both the spirit of Britain and the no-nonsense appeal of the sausage, their choice was Dunn. He also toured for the Egg Marketing Board.

For broad comedy, he was a natural. His father and grandfather had been comics and wanted him to follow the same route, but the young Clive had other ideas. Born in Brixton, south London, and educated at Sevenoaks school, Kent, he set his heart on becoming a film cameraman, something which appealed to his visual imagination – he later became an accomplished amateur painter – and his sense of security.

In the event, after the Italia Conti acting school, he lined up a job as a teaboy and general dogsbody with British Movietone News just before that company went out of business. His chosen course no longer seemed quite so secure. At the Italia Conti he had drifted towards comedy when he was sent up the road to play a dragon on a high wire and a frog at the Holborn Empire.

Richard Todd, later to become a cinema heart-throb, was in the same acting class. They both appeared before the then queen, the eventual Queen Mother, in a school ballet. This also signalled that Dunn's future might lie in making people laugh. Partnering an especially well-built girl and trying to pick her up, he slipped and dropped her. Despite or perhaps because of this, Dunn was quickly snapped up by talent scouts. He had walk-on parts in Goodbye Mr Chips (1939) and, with Will Hay, in Boys Will Be Boys (1935). When he was still only 17, he toured with British cinema's "bad girl", Jean Kent, in a revue called Everybody Cheer. Smitten by her charms, he wrote a song for her, which she sang in Gateshead without being getting booed and in Luton, where she was not so lucky. The infatuation did not prevail, either.

As the patriotic if uncertain lance corporal might well have done, Dunn made several attempts to enlist when the second world war broke out. He eventually joined the 4th Hussars, was captured in Yugoslavia and spent four years as a prisoner of war, held in a room above a barber's shop in Vienna and allowed out at night to do dirty jobs that no one else wanted. It gave him an eye for the oddities of military life.

The television series Bootsie and Snudge (1960-63) first earned him fame as an old-man impersonator. He played Old Johnson, the faithful waiter struggling to preserve order and decorum among those ministering to the gentlemen of the Imperial Club. After the success of this show and Dad's Army, Dunn often sank from public view, though he continued to work in clubs, doing a song and dance routine – he was a trained dancer and ascribed his bandy legs, two of his assets as a comic, to doing too much athletics at school.

Playing elderly men remained his forte. He even made a recording of his song Grandad, which sold 690,000 copies and was in the charts for 28 weeks in 1970-71, three of them at No 1. Using his oldie reputation, Dunn visited many pensioners' clubs and homes to cheer up the occupants, and once spoke at Trafalgar Square in favour of a campaign for better pensions.

However, he was immensely pleased to be chosen, for a change, to play Frosch, the slurred and tipsy – but not necessarily aged – jailer in a 1978 English National Opera production of Johann Strauss's opera Die Fledermaus. This, he insisted wryly, was at least one step up from his only other experience of being in opera, a quarter of a century previously – in a BBC radio performance of a modern work in which he played someone unable to hear or speak, uttering only grunts and groans synchronised with the dissonant music.

Dunn was appointed OBE in 1975, the year he appeared in a Dad's Army sketch at a Royal Variety Performance. A television series took up his Grandad character (1979-84), and he bowed out of the medium as Verges in Much Ado About Nothing (1984).

Dunn married twice. His first marriage, to the model Patricia Kenyon, ended in divorce after seven years. He married the Royal Shakespeare Company actor Priscilla Morgan in 1959. She survives him, as do their daughters, Polly and Jessica.

Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore looked for all the world as if he would live forever on his BBC programme, The Sky At Night.

He passed away peacefully at his home in West Sussex, a statement from his friends and colleagues said.

Sir Patrick was a television eternal, a man who lit up our screens for over 50 years, illuminating us with his knowledge of the celestial bodies glittering in the night's sky and entertaining us with his uniquely eccentric style.

He harkened back to a lost age of television, when "the expert" was a patrician figure, someone who would dispense their wisdom from an elevated position.

Yet although sometimes fearsome, Sir Patrick was never dry in his elucidations, and always kept in mind the medium he was working in, and how to make best use of it.

Sir Patrick Moore's early years
Born in Middlesex between the two wars in 1923, ill health in his youth meant Sir Patrick was educated at home. Here he developed his love for astronomy and, one might speculate, his distinctive individualistic streak.

He became a member of the British Astronomical Association at the age of 11, and during the Second World War served in the RAF as a navigator.

On leave in New York, he is said to have met Albert Einstein - one of the few intellectuals he came face-to-face with that could outrank him in terms of lasting cultural influence.

After the war, Sir Patrick's interest in amateur astronomy flourished. He constructed a telescope in his own back garden and started writing books on the subject.

In 1957, a copy of Sir Patrick's Sun, Myths and Men came to the attention of Paul Johnstone, a senior producer at the BBC.

Paul Johnstone was looking for someone to present a new, monthly television programme about stargazing and duly invited Sir Patrick to interview for the role.

The two men settled on a try-out period of three months. Sir Patrick went on to front almost every episode of the programme.

As the BBC's face of space, he was at the forefront of some truly extraordinary news stories, none more so than the Apollo Moon landing in 1969. This one, giant TV event embedded Sir Patrick in British cultural history, and bestowed iconic status upon this eccentric astronomer.

Troggs frontman Reg Presley has reportedly died following a battle with lung cancer

Reg Presley, lead singer of the Troggs, has died following a battle with lung cancer.

The 71-year-old, best known for the 1960s hit Wild Thing, died at his home in Andover, Hampshire, surrounded by his friends and family, close friend and music publicist Keith Altham said.

He announced the death of his "dear old pal" on his Facebook page, adding that the singer had recently suffered a number of strokes.

He said: "He was one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world. Our thoughts are with his wife, Brenda, and the family and those legion of fans who loved his music and his band. I will miss him hugely."

Presley founded The Troggs in the 1960s and the band became famous with Wild Thing, and later With A Girl Like You and I Can't Control Myself. His career received a boost in the mid-1990s when first REM and then Wet Wet Wet covered their 1967 hit Love Is All Around.

Presley, who was born in Andover, only stopped touring in 2012 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

In his later years, the singer-songwriter was known for his interest in the paranormal, including crop circles and UFOs.

Presley's daughter, Karen, confirmed her father's death to music website WENN. She told the website: "He passed away peacefully at home and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We're absolutely heartbroken."

Presley announced to fans that he was suffering from lung cancer in January last year after being taken ill at a gig in Germany. He said: "As you all know, I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital, tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.

"However I've had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years."

Richard Briers, star of The Good Life, has died at the age of 79. A magnificent actor of stage and screen, of comedy and Shakespeare, he will be sorely missed.

The television legend recently revealed his struggle with lung disease after being diagnosed five years ago. His agent Christopher Farrar confirmed the actor died at his London home on Sunday 17 February, 2013.

A former heavy smoker, he had suffered from emphysema. In one of his last interviews, he blamed his condition on his bad habit.

Beloved as the somewhat bumbling and occasionally downtrodden comedy figure, he starred in some of the most successful TV comedies of his era including the aforementioned Good Life and Ever Decreasing Circles.

Hi-de-Hi! star dead at 72

Hi-de-Hi! actor Paul Shane has died at the age of 72 following a short illness.

The star of the 1980s BBC sitcom was surrounded by friends and family in a hospice in his home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, when he died.

Paul Shane played holiday camp host Ted Bovis throughout Hi-de-Hi's 1980-1988 run. Set in a holiday camp in the late 1950s/early 1960s, Maplin's holiday camp was the scene of japes, fiddles and scrapes galore as wide-boy Ted Bovis concocted scheme after scheme to get one over on haughty camp manager Jeffrey Fairbrother (the late Simon Cadell).

The show also featured genial camp comic Spike Dixon (actor Jeffrey Holland), glamorous, razor-tongued senior yellowcoat Gladys Pugh (actress Ruth Madoc) and chalet-maid/wannabe-yellowcoat Peggy Ollerenshaw (Su Pollard).

Paul Shane went on to work again with Jeffrey Holland and Su Pollard, with whom he remained close, on a couple of other projects in an attempt to recapture the magic of Hi-de-Hi!

Hundreds of tributes were posted on Twitter, among them one from Ricky Gervais who called Paul Shane an "old school Britcom hero" and former EastEnders actor Shaun Williamson (Barry) wrote: "RIP Comedy Legend".
