Oktober 2005 Aufgenommen in Robbies Schlafzimmer hoch oben in den Hollywood Hills, wurde 'Intensive Care' von Stephen Duffy über einen Zeitraum von 24 Monaten mitgeschrieben. "Textlich ist es das beste Album, das ich je geschrieben habe", sagt Robbie, "obwohl ich das sagen muß, bevor das Album herauskommt. Aber ich denke, diesmal meine ich es auch so. Jedenfalls bin ich sehr zufrieden über die Art und Weise, wie es mit Stephen (Duffy) geklappt hat. Es hat mir auch eine völlig neue Zukunftsperspektive gegeben." Letztendlich, sagt Robbie, ist das Album - zumindest teilweise – von dem Human League Klassiker von 1984, der Single 'Louise, inspiriert, die von einem Mann handelt, der seine Exfreundin an der Bushaltestelle sieht und dem bewusst wird, daß er immer noch starke Gefühle für sie hegt. "Es ist einer meine Lieblingstitel aller Zeiten", sagt er, "und ich mochte die Idee, aus Louises Sicht der Dinge zu schreiben. So handeln einige Titel des Albums, Sachen wie 'Ghosts' und besonders 'Spread Your Wings', von ähnlicher Thematik, über ehemals Liebende, die sich immer noch nacheinander sehnen. Während der gesamten Aufnahmen von 'Intensive Care' begegnete Robbie immer wieder seinen Lieblingssongs aus den 80ern, besonders 'Louise' von 'Human League', das von einem Mann handelt, der seine einstige Liebe an der Bushaltestelle sieht und sich bewußt wird, dass er immer nicht tiefe Gefühle für sie empfindet. Mit 'Ghosts' wollte Robbie Louises Antwort schreiben, so dass die dahinplätschernde Melodie getränkt von underwiderter Liebesschmacht und süßester Melancholie ist. Die hast schon hymnischen Gesangsharmonien des Refrains indes, erhöhen die emotionale Schlagkraft enorm. Fälschlicherweise in der Presse als Robbies Reggae-Song beschrieben, ist 'Trippings' rollender Rhythmus eigentlich eher ein Verdienst der früheren Arbeiten von 'The Clash'. Robbie sagt: "Es ist so was wie eine Mini-Gangster-Oper. Bube, Dame, König und Ass in einem." Mit einem Refrain von einem "leichthosigen" Falsett, das die Tonleiter hochklettert, wie ein Feuerwehrmann eine Leiter hochsteigt. Fast schon Diskomusik mit seinem erhabenen Anstieg. Es war die erste Singleauskopplung von 'Intensive Care' und, neben 'Radio' aus dem Jahr 2004, eine seiner eher eigenwilligen Kreationen.
