Better Man

"I wrote this song called 'Better Man' and we were in the South of France and I was staying at this lovely place up in the mountains. I picked up the guitar and I went 'look, if John Lennon's about can you give me a song?'. And I started strumming these chords on the guitar, (and I'm not a guitar player), and I only know a few chords: well, all of a sudden I did these new chords that I'd never done before and sang the song, almost all of it, straight away. So I went and recorded it that night, and I just cried and cried my eyes out singing this song, and I knew that as I was crying, that I was onto a winner. I was thinking well, if this is making me bawl; the last one that made me bawl was Angels. It's just about feeling a bit sad and a bit sorry for yourself and not knowing how to get out of a rut."
